Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (508th position in the world ranking) continues her successful performance at the WTA250 tournament, having collected 100 thousand dollars to help Ukraine.
In the semi-finals, our compatriot beat the Frenchwoman Clara Burel (122nd). Having started the fight unsuccessfully and losing the first set, the Odesa woman later pulled herself together, turned the tide of the game and snatched the victory – 4:6, 7:5, 6:3.
“It took me too much effort to win this match. I had to fight and I left all my strength on the court. There were a lot of fans in the stands, so I tried to show good tennis. I was a little ashamed because of my level (laughs). I knew that the audience would cheer for Clara, but thank you for supporting me too.
How would I rate this match? For the fight, I would give myself a 10, and for the performance itself, given the unstable game, a solid 6. I hope that tomorrow my tennis will be better, and you will cheer for me a little more (laughs). Of course, I’m glad to be in the final, especially in this tournament. I have played many tournaments in my career and I enjoyed playing here. I am grateful to the organizers that they gave me a wild card and gave me the opportunity to return here. Now there is another final ahead, I will try to prepare and be ready to fight“, – said our tennis player in the comments after the match.
It should be noted that, having guaranteed herself 17,590 euros in prize money, Svitolina reached the final of the WTA tournament for the first time since August 2021, when in Chicago (USA) she defeated Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the decisive match and won her 16th title in her career.
Let us add that in the final, scheduled for May 27 (tentative start at 16:00 Kyiv time), Elina will play with Russian Anna Blinkova (66th), who in her duel turned out to be stronger than American Lauren Davis (58th). 6:2, 6:2. This will be the second meeting for Svitolina with a representative of the aggressor country on the courts of Strasbourg – in the quarterfinals, the Odessa woman dealt with Varvara Gracheva in two sets (6:3, 6:4).
