100 Days of Anger: Pot and pan protests continue in France

Must read

Another wave of mass protests swept across France. People are outraged by the pension reform adopted by the government bypassing parliament, and also by the fact that President Emmanuel Macron signed this unpopular law. Previously, protests took place mainly on weekends. This time the unions have chosen a working day because April 24 marks exactly one year since Macron was re-elected for a second term.

Tens of thousands of French people took to the streets with empty pots and pans. This “concert” disrupted the working trips of a number of government members. For example, Education Minister Pap Ndiai was forced to cancel a visit to one of the institutes in Lyon, as demonstrators were waiting for him outside the building.

Secretary of State for Children Charlotte Kobel was not admitted to the hospital in St. Maurice. Roman Minister of Culture Abdul-Malak was greeted with a clatter of pots in front of a theater in Paris. The Minister of Justice Eric Dupont-Moretti and the Minister of Health Francois Brown also heard the “music”.

Recall that the reform in France involves raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. The pension tax is also changing. Working French people will have to deduct a larger percentage of their income for pensions.

Protests have not subsided since January. In addition to demonstrations, unions organize national strikes. Despite this, Macron signed the law on April 15. At the same time, the president promised to calm his compatriots within 100 days.

Macron promised that in 100 days he would calm us down. We promise him 100 days of anger and protests. We didn’t get along at all.”, - said the leader of one of the trade unions on April 24.

He and his colleagues have warned that they intend to disrupt large-scale events due to take place in France in the next 100 days.

Perhaps we will leave without light the Cannes Film Festival, the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco, the Rolland Garros tennis tournament, the theater festival in Avignon.union leaders said.

Earlier reported that due to mass protests in Israel, the reform of the judicial system was postponed.
