Magnolias rarely experience major pest or disease problems, so this shouldn’t affect your care. Tree varieties prefer full sun over light shade. In warmer or drier climates, they appreciate a little shade in the afternoon.

These trees grow best in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but within a range of pH levels, there are appropriate growth conditions for them. Although magnolias can adapt to sandy, loamy, and clay soils, they do not grow well in soils with poor drainage. Once established, magnolias can be quite drought tolerant. Young trees need weekly watering until established. Determine the tree’s water requirement based on the temperature and rainfall in your area. Mulching around the base of the tree will help, but not near the trunk.

Magnolias prefer warm and humid climates. Seedlings may be susceptible to frost damage. Some varieties, such as star magnolia, do not tolerate heavy snow and ice.

Trees do not need fertilizer. Plant the tree in a hole that is three times the width of the root ball and fill it with earth from the hole. For best results, use a slow release organic fertilizer such as mulch.
