A 38-year-old woman from the Kyiv region, who received a heart and lung transplant from a posthumous donor, died in a Lviv hospital. This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lvov.
“We are sad to announce that the patient who received a heart-lung transplant last week has unfortunately died. Despite all the efforts of medical workers and a successfully performed operation, she could not be saved: acute rejection of donor organs occurred. The patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated on the second day after transplantation. The team of our doctors and the doctors at the Heart Institute did everything possible to stabilize him. They even connected ECMO, a device that replaces the work of the heart and lungs. However, at such an early stage, it was almost impossible to overcome acute rejection of two organs simultaneously. All resuscitation efforts, unfortunately, were in vain.”– the message says.
As FACTS wrote, in July the first heart transplant operation was performed in Ukraine on a 6-year-old girl. The child received an organ transplant from a 4-year-old boy who was diagnosed with brain death.
