ALAB data leak. Check if your PESEL is safe

Must read

Hundreds of test results conducted in recent years by the nationwide network of medical laboratories ALAB have leaked onto the Internet. You can check if criminals have our data.

The medical data of up to 50,000 Poles can be accessed online. This is the result of a hacker attack on one of the largest nationwide networks of medical laboratories, ALAB. This is the company that carries out this type of activity for most private medical networks. The criminals threaten that if they do not receive the ransom, they will publish the rest of the illegally obtained data.

ALAB patient data leak. How to check your data?

According to hackers, this is just a test leak, and the real one could be much larger. According to the portal Zaufana Trzecia Strona, the criminals allegedly intercepted as much as 5 GB of medical data, as well as 1 GB of contracts concluded by ALAB. These must be documents from 2017-2023.

You can check if our data has fallen into the hands of criminals. The government website BezpieczneDane.pl recommends going to bezpiecznedane.gov.pl/sprawdz-email and checking for a possible leak using a trusted profile (steps are described in the link provided).

And how can we control whether someone has used our personal data? This is where you can no longer be proactive: you should monitor your bank accounts and payment cards for unauthorized transactions. “It’s also worth checking your credit history regularly with Credit Reporting Bureaus to identify potential irregularities or suspicious activity. It is also important to carefully monitor the correspondence you receive and respond to any suspicious notifications or requests for personal information,” we read on the BezpieczneDane.pl website.

However, patients who have used ALAB’s services should not immediately panic. The criminals admitted that they have the results of more than 54 thousand tests that were ordered by ALAB from three contractors:

– clinic from Łomianki (study period: October 31, 2017 to May 26, 2020),

– clinic from Warsaw (study period: March 23, 2021 to April 27, 2023),

– medical practice in Lodz (study period: April 21, 2021 – September 27, 2023).

There is no information about leaks from other facilities.

Data leak. What might criminals use them for?

“The company would like to assure you that this matter is being treated as a priority and with the utmost seriousness. The main goal of the company is to clarify the incident together with authorized government agencies,” ALAB assured in the message.

Possible negative consequences for patients are also listed. These include:

  • third parties receiving loans from non-banking institutions, to the detriment of individuals whose data has been hacked, since many such institutions allow you to obtain credit or credit in a simple and quick way, such as online or by telephone, without the need to provide credit. identification,

  • gaining access to health services provided to individuals whose data has been hacked and their health data, since patient registration systems can often be accessed by telephone by verifying your identity using a PESEL number,

  • exercising the civil rights of persons whose data was violated, for example, to vote on share budget funds, which, in turn, will prevent persons whose data were used in an unauthorized manner from exercising their rights,

  • insurance or insurance fund fraud, which may result in negative consequences for data subjects in the form of problems associated with attempts to hold them responsible for such fraud,

  • registration of a prepaid telephone card that can be used for criminal purposes.

Let us emphasize: these are possible consequences. It is unclear how criminals want to use the stolen data.

Reserve your PESEL number

From November 17, 2023, you can reserve your PESEL number – using the mobywatel app or in person at the headquarters of any commune. The Ministry of Digital Technologies explained that the system is ultimately designed to protect Poles from the possible consequences of personal data theft – we read on the WP Finanse website. This possibility will not immediately open a security umbrella over us: banks, credit companies, telecom operators and notaries will only be required to check whether their client’s PESEL is limited from June 1, 2024. Currently they do not have such a technical capability.
