There will be no announced revolution in the fight against unscrupulous users sharing their passwords to Netflix. The streaming platform begins testing in four selected countries and offers new solutions.
Last fall, Netflix announced that it would introduce restrictions on account sharing with other users. The announcement of the online platform was caused by a significant decrease in the number of subscribers, especially in the US and Canadian markets.
Changes are caused by a decrease in the number of subscribers
In 2022, the streaming service lost subscribers for the first time in a decade, contrary to analysts’ forecasts. There was a huge sell-off in Netflix shares in the US stock market.
On Wednesday, February 8th, Netflix unveiled its highly anticipated recommendations. They show that the declared revolution will not happen, a pilot program will be introduced while outside the US.
The online platform is starting to make changes to password exchanges with users in four selected countries: Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.
Users will be prompted to set a so-called primary location for your accounts. Each will also have two “sub-accounts”. You will be able to share them with people who do not live in the same house. The service will charge a monthly fee for each additional user.
Over 100 million users share their passwords with others
The company presented a price list, each country has its own. In Portugal, the fee will be 3.99 euros per person and 5.99 euros in Spain. In New Zealand and Canada, users will have to pay less than $8 - New Zealand and Canadian dollars, respectively.
Changes will be implemented on the new Access and Device Management page. This will allow users to choose who has access to their accounts. If the idea proves successful, it will be launched in the US market in March.
According to the service, more than 100 million households currently use shared accounts. The introduction of restrictions would allow the company to minimize huge financial losses.
