Samsung has crossed the 3nm finish line ahead of TSMC, ahead of supplier Apple in 3nm chip production. That being said, Samsung is currently on its way to producing the most advanced chips in the world. According to Samsung, the new manufacturing process is 45% more energy efficient and delivers 23% better performance than the previous 5nm process.
These benefits are achieved through a process called Gate-All-Around (Gate-All-Around) transistor architecture.GAA FET), a FinFET upgrade, on a surface that has a 16% smaller surface area than before. Samsung said the process will be used for “low power high performance computing” with mobile processors coming later, and that the second-generation 3nm process will reduce power consumption by 50% and improve performance by 30% in a 35% reduction in footprint.
The fact that Samsung was the first to enter the market demonstrates Samsung’s position as an advanced chip manufacturer. However, the Korean tech giant has a long way to go to prove itself against TSMC, the Taiwanese chipmaker that dominates the market and produces chips for iPhone, iPad, MacBook and Mac from Apple, as well as reserves semiconductor wafers such as Nvidia and AMD. TSMC currently accounts for over half of the global foundry business by revenue. reports Bloomberg.
“We will continue to actively innovate in the development of competitive technologies and create processes that will help accelerate the achievement of technology maturity,” said Siyoung Choi, president and head of foundry at Samsung.
Bloomberg claims that 3nm chip production, a milestone for Samsung, will likely not have much of an impact on TSMC in the next 12 months. The Galaxy smartphone maker will first need to demonstrate that it can produce at the same cost-effectiveness as its competitor before companies start demanding its chips.
Samsung and TSMC are currently vying for multi-year deals with Apple and Qualcomm, two major technology firms looking to mass-produce 3nm chips that could improve the performance of existing products while unlocking new technologies. Samsung will manufacture these chips in South Korea at its Hwaseong facilities and then expand to Pyeongtaek. The company is currently building a plant in Texas where it could spend over $10 billion to produce 3nm processors.hips.
Achieving the 3nm process is a small win, but TSMC is presumably about to go into high-volume production. 2nm technology in 2025as the chips arrive in 2026, Samsung will need to keep its foot on the pedals to stand a chance of overtaking its fiercest competitor.
