‘Not just a monkey business’: Bored monkey maker accuses conceptual artist of trademark infringement

Do you know Bored Ape Yacht Club, popular NFTs collection that has seduced the likes of Justin Bieber, Paris Hilton, Jimmy Fallon? Well, the company behind the collection, Yuga Labs, is suing the artist who they believe is trying to devalue the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Yuga Labs registered a trademark a California infringement lawsuit last week against Ryder Ripps, a concept artist based in Los Angeles. Yuga alleges that Ripps abused its trademarks to its advantage and to the detriment of the company’s digital art. The lawsuit says: It’s not just a monkey.”

Bored Ape Yacht Club took the NFT market by storm when it fellwith athletes, celebrities, influencers and the usual crypto bros cashing in on the hype (too early?). Tens of thousands of combinations of fur color, backgrounds, and clothing options have helped “NFT” become a household name, but the path to the top has to come with some hurdles.


“In response to the popularity of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Defendant Ryder Ripps, self-proclaimedconceptual artist, recently started trolling Yuga Labs and forcing consumers to buy RR/BAYC NFTs by abusing Yuga Labs trademarks. He aims to devalue Bored Ape NFTs by flooding the NFT market with his own collection of copycat NFTs, using original Bored Ape Yacht Club images and naming his NFTs “RR/BAYC NFTs.” lawsuit readWith.

Ripps monkeys share aesthetics with Bored Ape Yacht Club, but Ripps claims to operate under the umbrella of fair use and satire Unlike egregious robbery. “RR/BAYC uses satire and appropriation to protest and educate people about The Bored Ape Yacht Club and the NFT structure,” he explains on the RR/BAYC website and says that through his own research, he has found a connection between BIKE and “subversive internet Nazi culture“.

Ripps documented his findings on gordongoner.com, claiming that several anthropomorphic monkeys of the Bored Ape Yacht Club have a racist connotation towards blacks and Asians. Ripps also claims that the logo of the Bored Ape yacht club resembles the Nazi emblem and that the parent company name refers to alto-Correctly movement called Kali Yuga. Ripps claims that Yuga Labs has been trying to hide its findings for months.


“The self-proclaimed writers behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club are deliberately incorporating poignant/subversive elements into Nazi and racist themes,” the statement said. Yuga did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Costume is just the latest in a long string of Bored Ape Yacht Club hiccups of late that include stealing millions of dollars from BAYC’s Instagram followers. after the hack last April.
