Jerzy Pekarzewski is dead. This is the legend of Polonia Warsaw

Must read

Polonia Warsaw reported sad news. Jerzy Piekazewski, the club’s only honorary president in history, has died at the age of 90.

Jerzy Pekazzewski can easily be called a legend of Warsaw Polonia. He is an activist who has been associated with the club for many years. He began working with Polonia in 1945 and took on almost all the important roles, allowing the team to flourish.

Polonia Warsaw says goodbye to Jerzy Pekarzewski

“Mr Jerzy Piekarzewski has been involved with our club since 1945 as a fan, boxer, manager of the Blackshirts football team, president and activist who fought for many years to prevent the club from being liquidated by communist authorities. We express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones,” we read in the profile of Polonia Warsaw on the X platform.

It is worth emphasizing that Pekazhevsky became manager of the football section in 1955, and later became president. He led the club to the place it dreamed of. In 1991, Polonia moved first to the second league, and a year later to the first league, which at that time was the highest level of the league. In 1999, he was the only one in history to be awarded the title of honorary president of the club.

Soon Polonia, under the leadership of Jerzy Engel, won the Polish Championship (in 2000). It was thanks to figures like Pekajevski that the team could even dream of such success.

Pekazhevsky is appreciated by others

It was Engel who often praised Pekazhevsky’s contribution to the development of the Blackshirts. The activist was also awarded the title “For services to the capital Warsaw.” His departure is a great loss for the football community of the Polish capital.

“I regret to inform you that this morning (March 31, editor’s note) Jerzy Pekajewski, an outstanding activist of Warsaw Poland, passed away,” Grzegorz Popelarz, the former president of Warsaw Polonia, wrote on social networks.
