Thriller of five sets in the Hubert Gurkacz match. The Pole will not play with Novak Djokovic

Must read

Hubert Hurkach and Juan Pablo Varillas gave fans in Paris a lot of emotions. In the match of the 3rd round of Roland Garros, according to the “tradition”, the gentlemen played five hundred. Ultimately, the victory will be won by the Peruvian, who will meet Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament.

On Friday evening, two tennis players met on court number four in Paris, who in total spent more than 15 hours on their feet. And this is after only two rounds played in the capital of France. Juan Pablo Varillas and Hubert Hurkach played the whole distance, that is, only four tie-breaks. At the same time, the Peruvian twice bounced back from 0:2 in sets.

Strong start to match with Hubert Gurkacz

However, the player from Wroclaw became the favorite of the Roland Garros third round match. The Pole in Paris played at number 13 and met with a player who ranks 94th in the world rankings. What’s more, Varillas hadn’t won a match before coming to Roland Garros in a Grand Slam this year.

Gurkach, as if confirming these words, began with a strong blow. After a little over a quarter of an hour, the score was 3-0 with a margin in favor of the Pole. The player from Wroclaw, first of all, followed his games on the pitch. Adding one break, after 30 minutes, the Hubi won the set with a score of 6:3.

Moreover, Gurkach started the second set with a 2:0 lead, again with a break. Varillas couldn’t find his rhythm, failing to get off to a good start. Unfortunately for the Polish fans, Hubi practically invited the opponent into the game, losing the next part of the match as much as 1:6 on aggregate. Varillas began to build up his game with the support of loud fans with Peruvian flags.

Pole’s medical break and exciting third set

Wroclawiec in the second game with a score of 2:3 asked for the so-called. medical break. However, looking at the movements of the Pole, it was difficult to detect any health problems. Gurkacz may be looking for a break in Varila’s rhythm.

However, it failed, because the aforementioned second set, and finally the third set, became the victim of the sensational Peruvian. Varillas, 27, defeated Gurkacs in a tiebreak after 62 minutes of fighting in the third set. It is worth noting, however, that the gentlemen spoiled the fans with long exchanges and struggles in individual games for advantages.

So it was, for example, in the ninth installment (5:5), when Gurkach served. Wrocławiec defended several times against the break and finally, after more than 10 minutes, took the lead 6:5. However, the next two games went to Varillas.

Health problems of Juan Pablo Varillas

The situation changed in the fourth set, when with the same result (ie 2:3) the Peruvian asked for a break for treatment. Gurkach used his “health time” in the locker room, and in the case of Varillas, a physiotherapist appeared on the court to support the Peruvian tennis player’s right hand.

A few minutes later the gentlemen returned to the competition. “Hubi” in the wall (1:2 in sets) managed to beat the player from Peru in the third game and steadily cultivated the advantage, once again defending hits on his serve.

As if more than seven hours on the court of Varillas were more noticeable than more than an hour at Hubie’s Paris fight. In addition, the Pole had much more Grand Slam experience on his side. After all, Gurkach is a semi-finalist at Wimbledon 2021. In Paris, he reached the furthest to the fourth round (2022).

Madness at Roland Garros

Excellent exchanges between the Pole and the Peruvian were observed by the fans at the end of the fourth set. Wroclaw got out of a big trouble, losing in the tenth set, having his serve, first 0:30 and then 15:40. However, in the decisive moment, Gurkach showed great skill, especially in defensive play. Varillas could not stand the long exchange, throwing the ball and closing the set on the opponent (4:6).

It became clear that victory would be decided in the fifth game, which the gentlemen entered after almost exactly three hours of Friday’s game.

The decisive part of the Peruvian started better. Varillas went 4-1 with half time advantage. Gurkacs momentarily lost concentration, and that was enough to lose the fourth game. The Pole started it at 0:40, and once again it was difficult to successfully reverse his fate.

In the seventh installment (2:4) Gurkach had a chance to win back. However, Varillas was able to defend against the onslaught of the favorite, going in the match with a score of 5:2. This unsuccessful attempt was the last on the part of the Pole. Peru can celebrate it has a player in the fourth round of the Grand Slam. Varillas won the last set against Gurkach 6:2, ending the match with a break.
