Well-known rivals of Iga Swiatek will play at the tournament in Russia. Amazing WTA position

Must read

This weekend (December 1-3) the second Northern Palmyra Trophies tennis tournament will be held in St. Petersburg. It is interesting that ladies and gentlemen will compete not only from Russia or our “friendly” Belarus. There will be more well-known people in the world of tennis who want to receive money from the sponsor – Gazprom.

Once again, a lot of controversy arises around the approach to Russia of the international tennis federations ATP (men) and WTA (women). Although a number of sanctions have been imposed since the start of the war in Ukraine, provoked by the troops of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, there have also been controversial “steps”.

ATP and WTA do not object to tournament in Russia

This list includes your position in the tournament taking place in St. Petersburg this weekend (December 1-3). The Northern Palmyra Trophy tournament, sponsored by Russian giant Gazprom, has attracted several well-known figures from the tennis world. Among the women, one of Iga Swiatek’s rivals in the WTA series, Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, will perform. There will also be representatives of the hosts, including Anastasia Potapova and Veronika Kudermetova.

Interestingly, among the men who confirmed their presence were, in particular: The Spaniard Bautista Agut and the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino should also be present. The biggest star of the ATP tournament will be the representative of the hosts, the 15th racket of the world Karen Kachanov.

Participation in a tournament in a country that started a war, what do the ATP and WTA think about it? It turns out that this event is not connected with the official tour, so there is no clear “no” here, but simply the federation (only the WTA officially comments) is dissociating itself from its organization. What about the participation of male and female tennis players? According to the federation, outside the official season, athletes have the right to do whatever they want, and no penalties will be imposed for their stay in Russia.

We add that, according to the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, the UN reported last week that more than 10 thousand civilians have died in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Iga Swiatek and all her championship titles

It is worth adding that the Polish woman won seventeen tournaments during her career. Swiatek has won four Grand Slam titles: three times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022 and 2023) and once at the US Open (2022). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).

In addition, victories at WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022), Doha (2022), Indian Wells (2022), Miami (2022) and Beijing (2023). The list also includes WTA 500 matches: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022) and Doha (2023). Plus a Polish accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
