The Olympic Games are the most important event for both volleyball players and fans. We have been waiting decades for a repeat of the 1976 result. PlusLiga has published the schedule for the 2023/2024 season, which will select the champion in April.
The current volleyball tournament is full of matches. The players play many league and cup matches to compete in the national colors after the end of the season. This means the depletion of organisms. The World Volleyball Federation is of little concern. In turn, the leagues are viewed more from the point of view of the organizer of the games than from the point of view of volleyball fans.
PlusLiga 2023/2024 format changes
The potential appearance of the PlusLiga next season has been discussed for many weeks. The Olympic qualification will take place in October and the Champions League final in May 2024. This means that you have to squeeze a whole season between periods. The presidents of the Polish league unanimously approved the program of games, according to which the full main phase will be played with the participation of 16 teams (on a rematch basis), but the playoffs will be shortened.
The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be decided in two matches with the possibility of determining the winner through the “golden set”. Medalists, in turn, will be determined by the results of two victories. This is a major change from the current format. In the 2022/2023 season, the Polish champions will play a maximum of 45 matches in the PlusLiga, and next year - 37.
- Several options were considered, as a result, the management of the clubs decided that it was best to keep the game in the league as similar as possible to the current one. It was not even necessary to vote, the clubs simply unanimously accepted this option. These will certainly be difficult games, but they give everyone an equal chance and keep the competition going in the playoff phase, Artur Popko told the PlusLiga official website.
Poland before the Olympic Games in Paris
The biggest proponent of shortening the season was the coach of the national volleyball team, Nikola Grbic. The Serbian wanted the PlusLiga 2023/2024 to end as soon as possible so that he could prepare volleyball players for the Paris Olympics for as long as possible. It is not known whether he will be completely satisfied with the proposed concept.
