David Kownacki is one of those who missed the March grouping of the Polish national team. In an interview he recently gave, he made no secret of his disappointment with Fernando Santos’ decision. He expressed it in strong words.
On March 17, we met with the Polish national team for the first matches of the Euro 2024 qualification. Fernando Santos surprised with several of his decisions, including the admission of Grzegorz Krychowiak. The second of the great absentees is David Kovnatsky. Previously, hardly anyone expected that the striker of Fortuna Dusseldorf might not be on the list of the chosen ones of the Portuguese, and yet it happened. - Looking at the competition in the national team, it seems to me that I could expect a challenge. When I saw that I was gone, it seemed to me that someone had shot me in the face. An additional surprise was the fact that Krzysztof Piatek was appointed at the same time as Fernando Santos, who was last in good shape in 2018 when he played at Genoa. By comparison, this season he has made 23 appearances, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists in Serie A.
In addition, Kownatsky reported that there was little contact between staff and the PZPN. “No one called, I didn’t have a signal, or I was followed. One day I got a call from the national team doctor when I recently got injured. He asked what my injury looked like because every Monday he reported to the coach. Thanks to this, I knew that I was generating interest, but there were no other signals, he concluded.
