Marcos Alonso Peña has died

Marcos Alonso Peña started and ended his football career at Racing Santander. Between these chapters, he represented Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Logrones. The former midfielder was part of the Pride of Catalonia team that won the Spanish Cup and Super Cup in 1983, and two years later, the national championship.

“FC Barcelona expresses its deepest condolences on the death of former Barcelona player and father of first team player Marcos Alonso Peña. All our strength to Marcos Alonso and his family. Rest in peace,” Pride of Catalonia tweeted.

In 1981-1985 he played for the Spanish national team. The midfielder was part of the team that reached the final of the 1984 European Championship, losing in the final match to France. In total, he made 22 appearances for La Roja, scoring one goal against Iceland.

Marcos Alonso football family

The midfielder, who died on February 9, came from a family with a football tradition. His father, Marcos Alonso Imaz, known as Marquitos, was a two-time Spanish international who wore a Real Madrid shirt in the 1950s. Younger fans will surely associate Marcos Alonso Mendoza, the current Barcelona player. The defender of the Catalan club in the past played for Chelsea, Fiorentina or - like his grandfather - for Los Blancos.
