It was only in the last match that Uruguay scored their first goal in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, the match between South Korea and Portugal decided who would advance from Group H.

Uruguay faced Ghana in the third round of Group H of the World Cup. This meeting had a certain emotional charge for the players and fans from Africa from the very beginning, because when these teams played against each other in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup, the players of La Celeste won after a penalty shoot-out.

Ghana could have stopped play early when Luis Suárez deliberately handballed the ball into goal in extra time. True, he weakened his team, but instead of a goal, Gan earned a penalty, which Asamoah Gyan eventually did not convert into a goal.

World Cup 2022: Ayew misses penalty

From the start of this match, the Ghanaian fans booed the former FC Barcelona and Liverpool star and applauded their players, who started the match very solidly and occasionally threatened the goal of the South American players.

At the 16th minute, Sergio Roche flashed an uncertain intervention, who threw himself at the feet of Mohammed Kudus, who had fallen to the ground. The Ghanaians rushed to the referee in protest and won the penalty.

In this situation, VAR had to intervene to first check if there was an offside and then if the Uruguayan goalkeeper had fouled. Judge Daniel Siebert had to run to the monitor to assess the situation himself. Five minutes later, the referee awarded a penalty.

Turning this “eleven” into a goal was tried by Andre Hay, who was preparing very slowly for the execution of a standard number. Ghana missed this golden opportunity to take the lead. Uruguay goalkeeper Serio Roche sensed the shooter’s intent and lunged to the left.

Two goals from de Arrascaet

The unused situation could quickly recoup, as in the 24th minute Darwin Nunez took the ball from Luis Suarez, who cut the ball over the interfering goalkeeper. At the last moment, Mohammed Salisu knocked the ball off the goal line.

In the 26th minute, Luis Suarez took a cross from the flank and hit the middle of the goal, according to the saying “What happened, then backfired”. Lawrence Ati-Zigi tried to intervene but, unfortunately for Ghana, the ball landed on the head of Georgiana de Arrascaet, who scored the first goal for Uruguay in this World Cup.

Six minutes later, de Arrascaeta scored for the second time. Luis Suarez played the ball over the defenders of the Ghana national team. This one hit right in the legs of the Flamengo player, who beat Lawrence Ati-Zigi with a strong strike on the ground for the second time. We didn’t see any more goals before the break.

Ghana did not change the result of this meeting in the second half

In the second half, Ghana started with a high three and already in the 46th minute had a chance to score, but Mohammed Kudus was offside. After a short spurt from the Africans, Uruguay took control of the match and won back the ball confidently.

The Ghanaians received gifts from the Uruguayans that could be exchanged for goals, but did not want the ball into the net. In the end, Uruguay went on the attack and South Korea beat Portugal, meaning Le Celeste needed one goal to advance at the expense of the Asians. Ultimately, this goal was not scored by Uruguay, which, along with Ghana, said goodbye to the World Cup in Qatar.
