Luckily my family is still safe. This is the moment when people take turns leaving and returning to the country. We are concerned. We hope this war ends soon and we can return to our homes.
Ukraine was very close to qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar. If it succeeded, do you think it would become an additional important incentive for the people of your country? Of course, the most important thing is the life and health of people. But it’s hard to hide that now the Ukrainian team could count on great support.
Of course. Football is the most popular sport in Ukraine. I think, despite the lack of promotion, people really appreciate the attitude of our players. They played very well, considering all the circumstances and difficulties. We were unlucky in the play-off final against Wales (0:1). That’s what sport is.
Can you choose one painting from the ongoing war in your country that shocked you the most?
All. Ever since the beginning of the war, I’ve been wondering why this is happening. I can’t find any answer. This war makes no sense to me. However, we must stand up boldly and fight for our future, our territory and our democracy. This is our choice for now.

I wanted to take a break for football. One of the most popular topics in our country is the transfer of Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona. You also changed leagues at the peak of your football career (moving from Milan to Chelsea in 2006 - ed.), and this was a big test for you. Do you think “Lewie” will have the same problem now? Do you have any advice for him?
I don’t think he needs my advice. He has already made his choice. He is already one of the best players. It has always been so. Especially since he has experience. His choice for Barcelona may have been the result of his desire to change leagues. In my opinion, he is one of the best strikers in the world.
I would also like to ask you how close you were to taking over as Poland coach in January.
I would not like to comment on this. I still have a contract that I signed with the Italian Genoa (the club fired Shevchenko from the post of first coach on January 15 of this year).
