The disclosure of information about the monarch’s health was intended to prevent speculation while at the same time encouraging the public to undergo regular health checks. This statement caused a huge resonance and met with an unexpected response. Charles III mentioned this in his last statement.

“The Charles Effect” in the UK

The news that King Charles had cancer led to increased interest in the topic of cancer. People in the United Kingdom have started looking for information about cancer symptoms. Just an hour after the monarch’s diagnosis was revealed, more than 1,500 people visited the NHS England website. Searches for cancer symptoms increased by 51 percent. In the media this phenomenon is called the “Charles effect”. The monarch addressed this issue in his latest statement.

King Charles thanks his compatriots

In the message, the monarch expressed gratitude for the words of support received. He stressed how pleased he was that the revelation of his diagnosis had led to increased public interest in the topic of cancer and greater attention to organizations supporting cancer patients – both in the UK and abroad. Every year the number of cancer patients increases not only in the UK, but throughout the world. “One in two of us will develop some form of cancer in our lifetime, but thanks to continued progress, more cancers are now being diagnosed at an early stage than ever before, and survival rates are the highest in history,” the professor said. Peter Johnson, National Health Service Cancer Director.

Prevention as a tool in the fight against cancer

Every year more than 2 million people in Poland develop cancer. The most important “tool” in the fight against cancer is prevention. Early detection of the disease gives a better chance of cure and full recovery. The Ministry of Health organizes many screening programs. Currently available programs:

  • breast cancer prevention,

  • prevention of diseases associated with smoking (including lung cancer),

  • prevention of cervical cancer,

  • prevention of colon cancer.

To minimize your risk of cancer, you should also avoid behaviors that increase your risk of cancer. This includes, but is not limited to: habits such as smoking, sitting for long periods in front of phone, computer and TV screens, eating too many highly processed snacks or drinking alcohol.
