Problems with memory and concentration are usually found in older people, but each of us wants these functions to work as best as possible. Cognitive decline can affect anyone, regardless of age. So what can you do to improve your memory? Of course, you should take care of yourself – get enough sleep, use a healthy and balanced diet, focus on regular physical activity, “gymnastics” of your mind. But that’s not all. Researchers have found that there is another way to do this.
Studies on the effects of multivitamins on memory
Researchers have found that taking a daily multivitamin can slow down cognitive decline. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This showed that older people who took daily multivitamin supplements had mild memory improvement compared to those who took a placebo (in this case, a sugar pill).
At the start of the study, 3,560 people over 60 were asked to learn 20 words using a computer program. Participants had 3 seconds to memorize each word, after which another appeared. Immediately afterwards, the participants were asked to write down all the words they could remember. Those who took daily multivitamins they were able to remember, on average, one more wordcompared to those who took placebo. Participants who took the multivitamin outperformed the placebo group on memory tests conducted over a three-year period. Although the effect was small, the researchers said it was statistically significant. However, more research is needed to determine how taking a daily multivitamin may protect against memory loss and cognitive decline.
Confirmation of previous research
The results of this study are in line with an earlier study published in September 2022 that showed improvements in memory, general cognition, and concentration in people who took multivitamins. “In science, this type of replication is one of the foundations »faith in results“. And while the scientists behind the latest study on the correlation between multivitamin intake and improved memory are enthusiastic, not all researchers share it. “This is an interesting study, but the differences are small,” said Dr. Jeffrey Linder, chair of general medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago (he was not involved in the study).
The expert also noted that too much focus on taking multivitamins to improve memory can lead people to stop focusing on other important factors.
“I’m also concerned that taking a multivitamin may distract from activities that we know are more beneficial for cognitive functions, such as proper nutrition, physical activity, maintaining social contacts and quality sleep.” – added.
Alzheimer’s disease researcher Dr. Richard Isaacson, a preventive neurologist at the Florida Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases, pointed out that there is no “magic pill” to prevent cognitive decline. Therefore, the intake of multivitamins should be treated only as an auxiliary element, and not as the main factor that improves memory.
