“The number of times we started behaving in such a way that we did not care about the coronavirus, the number of times we had an increase in the incidence. Tens of thousands of cases per day do not pose a threat to the healthcare system, but are dangerous for people, ”says virologist Prof. Wlodzimierz Gut, commenting on the latest data on the increase in SARS-CoV-2 infections.

We are dealing with another wave of coronavirus because the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections is alarmingly increasing. This is evidenced by data from the Ministry of Health. The average daily number of detected cases of infection over the past month has increased more than six times - from 350 to more than 2.1 thousand. daily. there were no such high from September 2022
Today, the Ministry of Health reported that over the past 24 hours, 2,758 new cases of infection have been received (of which 1,014 are re-infections).

“The data is about 2,000 infections per day. This level is clearly underestimated. due to the fact that not everyone goes to the doctor and not everyone gets tested,” says virologist Prof. Vladimir Gut.

Poland conducts 20 times fewer coronavirus tests than a year ago

Now an average of 10,000 tests are performed per day, which is about 20 times less than a year ago. Some prefer to take the test at home. There has been a significant increase in demand for antigen tests, which are available from pharmacies. As Professor Guth points out, pharmacy tests are not as accurate as molecular tests that are carried out in laboratories, but a positive result confirms the disease. Data on the number of infections, in his opinion, should be compared with historical data, taking into account percentage of positive test results. It follows from them that the wave of COVID-19 cases is much higher than in previous months.

The increase in the incidence of coronavirus is a consequence of the carnival

As the expert explains, the growth of infections is always caused by human activity. If you limit, then there are fewer infections, if there are more contacts, then there are more infections. According to Professor Gut, the current increase may be due to the increase in social events and games during the carnival. Such trends are observed after the holidays and after the holidays, when we move more often, visit relatives and friends.

“The virus does not spread by itself, it is spread by people. The more our activity, the more infections. The media are mixed and hence the infection. Waves of illness are seen several times a year: in November after the return of students to universities, after Christmas and Easter. Now the carnival is over and its consequences are visible,” says prof. Vladimir Gut.

Get vaccinated and don’t ignore the coronavirus!

Coronavirus is endemic in our population, which means that it is always present. Increases in incidence depend on how many people are susceptible to the infection at the moment, in whom it will lead to the further development of the disease. Even if someone thinks that this disease does not apply to them, sooner or later he will face it, - says prof. Intestine. This indicates that vaccination is an effective protection against the severe course of the disease.

Vaccinations are carried out everywhere in the world, which do not protect against infection, but modify the course of the disease, because the body is already prepared for it. The vaccine prepares the body for exposure to the virus. When it appears, the body already knows how to deal with it. Thanks to vaccination, the period of incubation of the virus and its removal from the body is shortened, says prof. Vladimir Gut.

The increase in the number of deaths may be due to coronavirus

Death data from the registry office shows that almost 10,000 deaths were recorded in Poland between November and December 2022. additional deaths. As the expert points out, some of them may be caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection or complications caused by this dangerous disease.
