How long can the war in Ukraine go on: an expert on the situation at the front

Must read

The Ukrainian army continues to try to break through the Russian defenses, but it will be a difficult and lengthy process, playing to exhaust the enemy and waiting for his crisis, he told the Polish edition of PAP military analyst and journalist Mariusz Celma.

In the conditions that we have, that is, in spite of everything, with a limited amount of heavy military equipment from the Ukrainian side, the absence of fighters and superiority in the air, as well as with a deep and fairly well-organized Russian defense, what is possible is happening. The Ukrainians are attacking the first line of defense mainly with artillery and targeting the rear to destroy Russian artillery, logistics and command, Mariusz Celma says in an interview. - Defending is always easier than attacking. In addition, the mined areas in front of the front line of defense create a huge problem for the Ukrainian troops, who in the spring received proportionately more light armored vehicles than heavy and specialized vehicles.

Ukraine’s tactics in this situation, he said, should be considered.quite rational”and consisting in attacks aimed at weakening, neutralizing or, preferably, destroying Russian forces, with the maximum involvement in certain sectors of the front.

What we see is mostly heavy artillery bombardment, with less frequent mechanized and motorized infantry, whose task is to reconnoiter and assess the effectiveness of their own artillery fire, and not hope for a quick advance - this is not yet possible.‘, he adds.

Currently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have crossed the first forward defense lines in several places. A breakthrough or interruption of these main lines is probably still a long way off. It is rather a tactic of playing to weaken, exhaust the enemy and wait for his crisis, the expert adds.

The occupiers built defense lines in Zaporozhye during the months of occupation. In the simplest terms, it looks like this: behind the wide minefields, the first, advanced line of defense. Then follows the main line, theoretically better fortified, and after it the third line, which can be called the rear. All this means that the Ukrainian side will face a difficult fight, especially with a relatively small amount of heavy equipment and a short preparation period.“, he notes.

The situation can be improved by cluster munitions received from the United States, allowing more effective attacks on Russian positions.

These are rockets, consisting of eighty charges weighing about half a kilogram each, allowing you to cover a large area with fire at a time.”, explains the PAP interlocutor.

The lack of combat aircraft is the main problem for the Ukrainians, since, according to the expert, it is impossible to talk about an effective offensive without an air superiority, ground operations are in dire need of this support.

If Ukraine had, for example, F-16s, it could more effectively counter Russian aircraft that drop such bombs from a distance. Ground systems such as the Patriot could take over the fight against aircraft, but they are not close to the front line, because they protect cities..
