Coughed in a coffin – lost payments: a curiosity in Poland

Must read

In Poland, where many Ukrainians are fleeing the war, a very atypical incident took place in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. According to Yavp.pl with a link to eskarock. pl, employees of the ZUS (Department of Social Welfare) came to the funeral home with a routine check. All because the owner of the company went on sick leave, and ZUS conducts random checks on such persons to make sure that they are really sick, and not working or resting at this time.

The owner of the funeral home took sick leave unreasonably, because at that time he was at work. Realizing that he could lose sick pay, he hid from the inspectors in a coffin. And everything would probably have worked out if the man had not started coughing there. The cough gave it away. After the owner of the company was seen at the workplace and even in such a hiding place, the payment of sick leave was canceled for him.

In 2022, in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, ZUS checked 32.5 thousand people who went on sick leave. As a result, more than 1.4 thousand people canceled the payment of sick leave for a total amount of PLN 1.3 million. Across Poland last year, sick leave payments were canceled for 23.8 thousand people in the amount of PLN 22 million.

As FACTS wrote, more and more refugees from Ukraine in Poland stop receiving social benefits from ZUS without breaking the law.
