Russian troops have been fighting to capture Bakhmut, a city with a pre-war population of around 70,000, since around May 2022 and have suffered huge losses in the process. Geolocation footage released on March 3 confirms that Ukrainian troops have destroyed two critical bridges in the Bakhmut area - one across the Bakhmutovka River in the northeast of the city and one on the Khromovo-Bakhmut highway west of Bakhmut. This is stated in the daily report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The preliminary destruction of the bridges likely indicates that Ukrainian forces may be trying to impede Russian movement in eastern Bakhmut and restrict potential routes for Russians to escape the city to the west, experts say. Oleksandr Rodnyansky, an adviser to the President of Ukraine, had earlier said on February 28 that Ukrainian troops could retreat from positions in Bakhmut if necessary. He also noted that Ukraine had fortified the territory to the west of the city in such a way that even if the Ukrainian troops began to retreat, Russian troops would not necessarily be able to quickly capture the entire city.
If the Ukrainian military command deems it necessary to withdraw troops from Bakhmut, it is likely to conduct a limited and controlled withdrawal from the particularly difficult sectors of the eastern part of the city, judging by Ukrainian statements and reports of Ukrainian actions, ISW analysts say.
Let us recall the interview to of journalist Alexei Kondakov, who is fighting in hell itself: “We will defend Bakhmut to the last.”
