On Sunday, November 27, riots broke out in the center of Brussels, as well as in Antwerp. They were provoked by the unexpected defeat of the Belgian team at the World Cup. The Belgians lost to the Moroccan national team and complicated the possibility of leaving the group.
The victory of Morocco was decided to vigorously celebrate the natives of this country living in Belgium. Emotions were running high. Football fans overturned cars and smashed window panes in them, smashed shops, set fire to doors in houses and garbage. Groups of young people attacked the Belgians.
Additional police forces had to be called in to restore order. Water cannons and tear gas were used against the hooligans. Riots in Brussels continued until late in the evening. The mayor of the city urged fellow citizens to refrain from visiting the center and a number of other areas.
The number of victims, as well as the amount of damage caused, is being specified. 11 rioters were detained.
