Ukraine recalls its citizens from Kosovo who participated in the peacekeeping mission. We are talking about KFOR (International Peace Support Force in Kosovo under the leadership of NATO).
It is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Command of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“As of today, there is a national contingent of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Kosovo, the Republic of Serbia, consisting of 40 military personnel,” the report says.
The department noted that measures are now being taken to return them to Ukraine.
The reason is Presidential Decree No. 114 of March 7, 2022 “On the recall of the national contingent and national personnel participating in international operations to maintain peace and security.”
“The return of the national contingent will mean a temporary cessation of its participation in the KFOR mission,” the Joint Forces Command said.
Recall that on July 31, Serbia and Kosovo were on the verge of a military conflict due to unrest on the border. Then, in the north of Kosovo, local Serbs began erecting barricades, protesting against the decision of Pristina (the capital of the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo) to re-register vehicles and ID cards.
Subsequently, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the Kosovo army was allegedly planning to attack his country.
Later, the situation was resolved: the government of partially recognized Kosovo announced that it would delay the replacement of Serbian documents and license plates until September 1, provided that Serbian protesters dismantled the barricades before the end of the day.
As you know, Kosovo withdrew from Serbia and declared its independence in 2008. Serbia still does not recognize the independence of the republic. Kosovo has been recognized by 116 countries, including the United States and most EU countries. Among those who refused to recognize the independence of the republic are Ukraine and some EU members.
