The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia is preparing a proposal to the European Union to stop issuing Schengen visas to Russians.
This was stated by the head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry. Urmas Reinsal.
ERR writes that the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to prepare proposals for the EU in the coming weeks.
“It is really curious that Russian citizens are now traveling en masse across the western border of Russia - through Finland, Latvia, Lithuania - to visit the Louvre in the summer, while children are being killed in Ukraine. It is certainly morally wrong,” he said.
Reinsalu noted that the issue of visas for Russian citizens was already discussed in the European Union in March, but at that time there were restrictions in Russia due to the coronavirus, and travel was not as massive as it is now.
“I have already raised this issue with the Foreign Ministers of Finland and Latvia, and we will, of course, consult with the governments of our region in order to find wider support for this initiative. We need all countries to be in favor,” the minister said.
According to Reinsal, Estonia should also evaluate whether already issued visas should be withdrawn on certain grounds.
Recall that the UK imposed sanctions against four Russian colonels of the 64th separate motorized rifle brigade, involved in atrocities against civilians in Bucha, Kyiv region.
Also, from June 14, the European Union, as part of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia due to the war in Ukraine, disconnected the largest Russian bank Sberbank, as well as the Russian Agricultural Bank and the Moscow Credit Bank from the SWIFT interbank system.
Earlier, the EU introduced the sixth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, which provides for the prohibition of Russian oil and the disconnection from SWIFT.
Earlier, the European Union announced a decision to disconnect Russian banks that fell under sanctions from the SWIFT system.
