The Canadian Senate urges the EU to use the gas transportation system of Ukraine and abandon the Nord Stream – 1

Using the Ukrainian gas transmission system instead of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline to deliver the remaining volumes of gas to Europe will force the Russian army to abandon attempts to destroy Ukraine’s infrastructure. Such a statement was made Member of the Senate of Canada, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Progressive Group Pierre Dalfond.

The Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline provides a continuous flow of money needed to finance Russia’s illegal and immoral aggression against Ukraine and its people. A number of efforts by European states to reduce purchases of Russian gas should be encouraged and supported by other countries, including Canada,” the senator said.

“It would also be possible to consider redirecting the remaining gas supplies to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline through the Ukrainian gas transmission system. This will force the Russian army to reconsider its attempts to destroy all Ukrainian infrastructure,” – says the Canadian politician.

“About the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, in my opinion, Germany and the EU should make it clear to Russia that this is a doomed project and it will never be put into operation,” summed up Pierre Dalfond.

Calls to stop the Russian Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline were earlier made by parliamentarians in a number of European capitals, including Berlin.

In turn, Bundestag MP from the Greens Robin Wagner noted that Germany is already working to achieve independence from Russian gas, building LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals and entering into new supply contracts. According to him, Germany’s goal should be to stop gas imports as soon as possible due to Nord Stream 1.

In the French Senate, Senator Guillaume Gontar said that the international community should continue to put pressure on Russia in all possible ways, despite the damage to the economies of Western states. According to him, while Europe is dependent on Russian gas, the Kremlin still has an instrument of pressure, and the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 1 must be stopped.

Member of the Finnish Parliament, member of the Defense Committee Anders Adlerkreuz said that Europe cannot be dependent on a country that does not respect the international legal order, and must end its dependence on Russian energy resources. He noted that this vision includes the shutdown of the Russian Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.

In the UK Parliament, Lord Mehnad Desai, a member of the House of Lords, said that one of the tools that the EU can use to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine and ensure the integrity of Ukrainian borders is to stop the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.

Member of the Swiss Parliament, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee Nicholas Walder stressed that the rejection of Russian gas is a necessary step and Europe should do everything possible to stop the Russian Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline as soon as possible.
