Editor’s Note: Below are spoilers for the Season 4/Episode Finale. Jack Ryan Tom Clancy.

Jack Ryan from Tom Clancy Season 4 ended with a bang as the show finally ended its five-year run that began back in 2018. Episode 6, “Proof of Concept”, picks up where the season started as Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) was kidnapped by former operative-turned-traitor Bill Tuttle (Michael McElhatton) men in Myanmar.

Acting CIA Director Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) is an integral part of Ryan’s release - she is literally in the process of a confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill as “yes” and “no” are heard in the Chamber chamber. She narrowly wins the vote and is appointed as the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Her first order of business will apparently be to take her man out of Shan State, Myanmar, where Ryan is being hanged and tortured by Zeyar Lemos (Zuleikha Robinson). Mike also bleeds after being shot by a sniper at the end of episode five when he and Domingo Chavez (Michael Peña) regroup at the Black Hawk helicopter. Meanwhile, James GreerWendell Pierce) conducts a small informal interrogation of Tuttle to find out who financed the operation and where the five bombs are headed. Let’s unpack how things went downhill at the end.

Our protagonist will find it difficult to save the day, as he usually does, while being tortured with medieval-style electricity in a remote and abandoned prison in Shan State. Lemos argues that the trigger and five device plot was just a “proof of concept” to show that the United States is just as vulnerable as any other country. She wants to know everything he knows about the customers on the other end of the line.

It is none other than Ryan’s person in charge, Domingo “Ding” Chavez, who performs a Rambo-style solo assault on the abandoned prison where Ryan is being held. Chavez sets the car on fire as a decoy as he establishes his position. He then cold-bloodedly and covertly kills a handful of armed soldiers one by one on his way to putting a bullet in the head of the architect of the biochemical attack after she tries to bribe him. Huge mistake. Chavez is above that, and Lemos will learn the hard way that no deals will be made.

After trips to Mexico, Croatia and Myanmar, the good guys find themselves back at the US-Mexico border. After Tuttle leads them to discover that the bombs are being delivered by five trucks crossing the border on one large 18-wheel flatbed, Ryan attempts to locate them. The problem is that the bombs are already on their way and hidden in a sea of cars trying to cross the border in a Toyota truck. Ryan uses the pre-weight and additional weight of Toyota trucks as a tool to determine which semi-trailer is carrying the lethal devices. At that very moment, a driver hauling half-full Toyota trucks shoots a border patrol officer and goes on a rampage as he drives the massive truck through traffic to the Texas border.

They manage to neutralize the driver, but he is only one of several men armed with machine guns. A hail of gunfire begins and Ryan is right in the middle of it. Back in Washington, director Wright decided that if the media was filming the exchange, then Ryan and his team were already too late. She then goes to her computer and sees a resignation letter from Texas Senator Henshaw (Derek Cecil), who spoke openly to Elizabeth Wright throughout the season about distancing himself from Ryan and his desire to prevent global terrorist threats, which means he knew about the attack from the very beginning. Ryan and his team manage to stop the bombs from entering the country.

While this is happening, Greer is working closer to home in Maryland to figure out where the money is coming from to fund the threat. He and Director Wright discover that former CIA Director Miller (John Schwablisten)) worked with up-and-coming political player Adebayo “Ade” Osoji (Okyerite Onaodovan) to set up shell companies to funnel the money needed to finance the conspiracy. Director Wright let him get too close as an advisor and inadvertently fed him information from inside the Beltway.

Greer’s interrogation of Tuttle reveals his involvement in the scheme and so Ade wants immunity in exchange for her telling them where Ryan is being tortured. Wright must make a difficult decision, but does not hesitate to apply to the Justice Department for immunity. Wright later discovers that her former girlfriend Ade was responsible for the murder of former DIA director Miller. Ade’s immunity deal becomes moot, and he is arrested in a D.C. bar for treason and a host of other whims. Director Wright gracefully and commandingly accepts his new role, while Ade is led away by the police.

Ryan climbs a large rig to find the devices installed in the chassis of all the trucks and tries to disable the devices. The tension comes to a head when Ryan manages to successfully disable the first biochemical weapon. He and Mike November are able to find and defuse other bombs and stop the threat at the border.

After Ade is arrested for Miller’s murder, Ryan gives a speech on the Senate floor, chaired by Texas Senator Henshaw. He reveals that he broke protocol and averted the threat “by any force necessary” and has a Senate committee investigate all the petty flaws that allowed the threat to come so close to becoming a reality. He then made a bombshell by exposing Senator Henshaw’s involvement in the attack in exchange for large-scale donations to his re-election campaign. Ryan berates Henshaw and all other people who are ready to sell out the United States, denouncing their traitorous ideals and arguing that they pose the biggest threat to America and should be removed from the government. All five main characters, including Ryan, Greer, November, Chavez, and Principal Wright, have one last powwow in front of the Capitol building and exchange pleasantries before Jack Ryan leaves another job well done.
