A few years after Alita: Battle Angel Premiering on the big screen, it looks like development on the 2019 blockbuster sequels is really moving forward. During a recent interview with Forbes, James Cameron confirmed that in the near future we will spend some time working on a sequel Alitaeven though he is currently busy Avatar sequels. The interview took place for Cameron to discuss the sale of one of his properties, and the director’s talk about the future of the franchise certainly came as a surprise. Here’s what James Cameron had to say about Alita sequels:
And I’m working on Avatar in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel movies, I would be working in Austin, so it didn’t make sense for us (to live there) anymore.
Alita: Battle Angel was sent Robert Rodriguezand it followed the main character played by Rosa Salazar. As a reborn amnesiac cyborg, Alita needed to find her place in the world again, and that proved easier said than done given how she lived in a place where everyone had to fight for themselves. A feature of Alita was the fact that she had a human brain, which is rare in her post-apocalyptic reality. Plagued by the violence shown in her community, she sings as a Hunter Warrior to unravel the conspiracy behind the constant theft of robot parts.
While Alita was strong enough to save the day, the same could not be said for the film itself. While the film’s box office performance was impressive for a February release, its high budget prevented it from becoming a fully profitable venture. Fox. In addition to this, the acquisition of the studio by the company Disney delayed any potential development of sequels while the merger was taking place. But now it looks like James Cameron is ready to return to the world of Alita, as the highly anticipated sequel could finally start development in the near future.
