NBC has issued an unfavorable verdict on two of its comedies. The network announced today its decision to cancel Young Rock And Grand Crew which ran for three seasons and two seasons respectively. Young Rock was based on the life of a wrestler turned action hero. Dwayne Johnson chronicles his career from the wrestling ring to the movie screens. Grand Crewon the other hand, focuses on a group of wine-loving African-American buddies in their 30s coping with love and life.
Both shows ended their past seasons with poor ratings. Young Rock slightly overshadowing Grand Crew. Young RockThe season three finale aired in February and ranked fourth in total viewership of the network’s 5 sitcoms. Grand Crew, on the other hand, ended season 2 in April with just 1.3 million viewers, the lowest average of any show on the network. General, Young Rock performed best in both critic and viewer ratings, with the first season earning a near-perfect 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although those numbers gradually dropped to 71% in the third season.
Young Rock sheds light on Johnson’s path to movie stardom, dating back to his formative years at the age of 10. The series is “set in a frame story in which Johnson runs as a candidate in the 2032 United States presidential election.” Through the skillful use of flashbacks, viewers witness Johnson, now a presidential candidate, reflect on key moments from his childhood during interviews shown in each episode. Season 3’s climax not only left viewers hungry for more, but promised further exploration of Johnson’s early forays into acting and the huge obstacles he faced as he transitioned into the realm of Hollywood. Three actors have played multiple versions of Johnson, including Adrian Groulks like its 10 to 14 years old, aka Dewey, Bradley Constant like its 15 to 17 years old, and Uli Latukefu like its 18 to 26 years old.
