Mythosaurus was, as the name suggests, a legendary creature even in a fantasy world. The Mandalorian. A gigantic, underwater beast, spoken of in hushed tones by the likes of Armsmaster (Emily Swallow). Its legend meant that it was an appropriate symbol of the Mandalorian clans that could be worn by all. Images of the mythosaurus existed in star Wars long before Pedro Pascal donned his Beskar armor, first appearing on the shoulders of one Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. Shortly thereafter, it became the official symbol of the Mandalorian creed. When The Mandalorian debuting, the Mythosaurus skull logo could be seen above the entrance to the Armsmaster’s hideout.

Rachel Morrisonwell-known cinematographer who worked with Ryan Coogler on Black Panther And Fruitvale station along with - perhaps more appropriately - the future Mando executive producer and director Rick Famuiva in his film Drugtook the chair of the director of the third season of the series The Mandaloriancalled “Mandalorian Mines”, in which we first see the Mythosaurus.

After Pedro PascalDin Djarin, bathing in the waters of Mandalore to restore his honor and status, is dragged into the depths by the Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) dives down to rescue a bounty hunter before confronting a giant beast and causing Bo-Katan to have a crisis of faith in his place in Mandalorian culture. “The interesting thing is that from where we did the pre-visualization, I think we were ready to go, and then the trailer for shang chi came out and there was a shot in the trailer that, I kid you not, was almost identical to our plan for the Mythosaurus,” Morrison said. “And I mean, thank God he came out in a trailer and [we] got ahead of him because we knew we needed to change immediately.”

The revelation of the mythosaurus had wide implications for the plot due to its importance in Mandalorian lore. Mandalore? We know that mythosaurs were the original dominant species of Mandalore, like dragons in ancient fantasy, before dying out over the millennia. But they were sacred beings in that Mandalorian story, which Morrison knew meant they had to make the discovery special.

“It was like, how do we get the same tension, enough teasing without too much information, but we have to channel it in a completely different direction? So it was more of a cliffhanger, how do we do it differently? But it was always the intention to be a mystery, an excitement and a really exciting moment that will take you through the rest of the season.”
