For the third time in a row, a new film tops the weekend box office. After Quick X And Mermaid both opened slightly below expectations, the domestic box office is looking to rebound significantly this week. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versethe long-awaited sequel to the critical and commercial hit of 2018 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The animated superhero sequel made an impressive $17.4 million in Thursday previews, the second-highest preview for an animated film after 2018. Incredibles 2.

This Pixar movie ended up being the biggest animated release ever with $608 million in lifetime domestically. Through the universes of spiders likely not to reach this mark, and in fact it is projected to be less than half of what Incredibles 2 grossed in its opening weekend ($182 million). How are things, Through the universes of spiders is looking for a $80+ million debut weekend, but it’s possible he’ll bring in a bigger haul given the excitement surrounding him. Earlier this year, Movie Super Mario Bros. beat forecasts and ended up earning $204 million for their extended five-day debut, well above the $130 million figure originally expected.

If these predictions are worth, Through the universes of spiders easily double the original weekend catch In spider verse ($35 million). This film made $3.5 million from Thursday previews; it finished its domestic run with $190 million and earned worldwide with $384 million. That might not sound like much, especially when compared to the numbers that most major superhero movies show these days - like, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Maniawhich, by all accounts, proved to be ineffective ended up earning almost $100 million more, but it’s worth remembering that In spider verse was produced on a reported budget of $90 million, a fraction of the cost of most major animated films.
