After what many described as an underwhelming first weekend, Disney Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is approaching one of the best second weekends for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film in the post-pandemic era. The Superhero Trilogy grossed $15.7 million on its second Friday and is estimated to earn $58 million in its sophomore weekend at the national box office. This brings the film’s domestic gross to over $200 million by Sunday.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opened to a so-so $118 million in its opening weekend, which was in line with forecasts but significantly lower than the weekend debuts of other Marvel titles such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, Thor: Love and Thunder And Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. If the current predictions are correct, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will provide the best second weekend for an MCU facility in the post-pandemic era, down just 51% from the first weekend.
Compared, Doctor Strange 2 fell 67% in its second weekend, while Spiderman: No Way Home the fall was 68%. The last time an MCU movie registered such a healthy hold was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021. Like its two predecessors, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 also received good reviews and received an excellent A CinemaScore from the audience on its opening day. It seems to be paying off.
This should come as a much-needed relief for Marvel; the studio went crazy with bad work Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, which grossed $475 million worldwide, less than either of its predecessors, which only fueled the “superhero fatigue” discourse. Each new release of the MCU is met with close attention from fans and statements that the audience is tired of superhero movies. To be honest, this year has been pretty disappointing for the genre. Ant-Man 3 And Shazam! Fury of the gods not deliver the goods. And in case you forgot, last year ended infamous Black Adamwhich failed to gross $400 million worldwide in its theatrical run.
Only one new release made the top five
But for now Guardians of the Galaxy 3Fate seems to be turning, new issue of the week, mother’s day counter-programmer Book Club: The Next Chapter, opened on Friday with $2.1 million. The older-leaning drama is expected to make $7 million this weekend and take third place. For comparison, the first book club The film made $13 million in its opening weekend of 2018 and was a hit. It grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office. In second place is an animated hit Movie Super Mario Bros., which added $2.9 million on its sixth Friday, bringing its current net worth to an astronomical $525 million. Fourth place went to the horror hit The Evil Dead Rise, which added $1.1 million on its fourth Friday. The film has grossed $57 million domestically so far and is set to top $60 million by Sunday. Rounding out the top five is Lionsgate’s comedy-drama. Are you God there? It’s me, Margaret. After adding $515,000 on Friday, the film is expected to gross $2.3 million this weekend, bringing its current net worth to around $16 million.
Elsewhere at the box office, director Robert Rodriguezlow-key film noir Hypnoticstarring Ben Affleck, will open an approximately $2 million worth of program in more than 2,000 theaters.
