The penultimate episode of the second season of “Ghosts” is drawing to a close… in part

In the penultimate episode, the hunt for Alberta’s killer comes to a head as the local newspaper takes Sam’s podcast offline and gives her another episode to wrap things up. In the previous episode, we ended the investigation on a rather grim note as Alberta was forced to come to terms with a note they found hidden in a wall that apparently depicted Alberta’s sister as her killer. To disprove this theory, Alberta, Hetty, Sas, Isaac, and Thor use their memories of the night to piece together everything they’ve seen first hand.

They end up at a dead end, but that’s because Hetty has been hiding the killer’s identity all along. It was the son of Hetty Thomas (Daniel Ringgress-Kay), who secretly dated Alberta’s boyfriend on the side. He used a bottle of poisoned moonshine to get Alberta out of his sight so he could completely possess their man. Although Alberta doesn’t blame Hetty for her son’s role in what happened - well, not really - she is absolutely furious with Hetty for keeping this secret from her and forcing her to speculate about what happened over the course of a century. All the while, Trevor, Flower and Pete get caught up in a classic Nigerian prince’s email scam seeking help and risk Sam and Jay’s financial security to do so, but luckily everything works out well.

The aftermath of Hetty’s high-profile exposure

Upon learning of Hetty’s betrayal, Alberta refuses to talk to her. Their tension has begun to make the other ghosts uncomfortable as well, so a meeting of the Court of Ghosts is called to decide how to proceed. Pete, Sas and Flower preside over the court as Alberta lays out her case, explaining how Hetty’s betrayal lasted for a century. Hetty does not deny the allegations made by Alberta, but explains how she has changed over the past century with the help of good friends and the washing machine. She used to view other women as competitors as she was taught, but found a true friendship with Alberta. She spoke up because she couldn’t let her friend think that her sister had killed her before offering Alberta a heartfelt and heartfelt apology. After hearing both sides, the Court allows Alberta to decide whether she wants to accept Hetty’s apology and return to her normal life with harmony restored, or let the Court proceed with punishment. Without thinking, Alberta chooses punishment.

The court adjourns temporarily and reconvenes to announce that Hetty has been convicted of spending a year alone in the woods on Woodstone’s property. Hetty is stunned by this harsh punishment, and Alberta doesn’t seem very happy about it either. However, Hetty accepts her fate, proving just how far she has come, just as Trevor enters to announce that Isaac and Nigel are engaged. This rubs salt in the wound of Hetty’s expulsion. Alberta asks if he and Hetty can still spend time together, but the court explains that this is not an option and cancels the purpose of expulsion. Alberta decides to commute the punishment and forgive Hetty, but on one condition. She demands Hetty’s bedroom, leaving Hetty in the room with Flower, which is perhaps the worst punishment for Hetty in some ways.

Isaac has money

With a gift of a scented candle, Sam finds the ghosts to deliver important news. She informs them that the publisher has given her a $20,000 advance for Isaac’s memoirs. However, given the large salary, the other ghosts are a little confused that she received such a cheap gift. Instead, they suggest that Sam turn down half of the advance so that Isaac can buy something we would like and be able to use him as a ghost. Sam reluctantly relents despite Jay’s strong objections, so Isaac immediately starts thinking about what he would like to spend the money on. Soon after, when the ghosts smell the dinner, Isaac reveals that he has already decided to spend the money on a new couch, which causes an emotional outburst in Nigel (because the new bed only fits one, just like Isaac’s current bed). Isaac is very confused, but Sas, Flower and Nancy (Betsy Sodaro) to explain to him that this shows that he is not yet ready to move forward in his relationship with Nigel, which upsets his beau.

After a pep talk from Thor and Trevor about what to do, Isaac finds Nigel. Isaac tells Nigel that he knows Nigel is upset that he is not ready to move in together, but Isaac explains that he doesn’t feel their relationship is at the right stage to move in together. But as Nigel digests the news, Isaac says they should take their relationship to this stage. He gets down on one knee and proposes, to which Nigel quickly agrees. Happy engagement, they decide to move in together and use the money to buy a big bed.

The “legitimate” Woodstone heir

Sam and Jay are caught off guard by a woman named Kelsey (Jessie Ennis), shows up at Woodstone claiming to be the legal heir to the property. She tells Sam that her father was David Woodstone (Brian Cook), Trevor’s friend and Sam’s uncle, who had an “office romance” with an exotic dancer at a club he frequented in the 90s, which led to, well, her. At first, Sam is so excited to have found a new family member, but Kelsey informs her that she is technically more Woodstone than Sam, so the house rightfully should have gone to her. Sam and Jay call lawyer Dan (PJ Byrne), who represents the Woodstone family estate, and sends his DNA specialist to the house to make sure Kelsey is really who she claims to be. When the results are in, Dan announces that Kelsey is the rightful owner… and his new client.

As Sam and Jay ponder what to do, the ghosts wonder what their new life will be like with Kelsey as the hostess. Jay reveals that the club David frequented was called Scores, but Trevor tells them the story of how David was banned from Scores after asking for autographs, so the story Kelsey tells cannot be true. Next step? Find David’s ghost and ask him for the truth. They go through his obituary and find that he died at the gentlemen’s club. Sam and Jay immediately hit the road and easily find David’s ghost after he makes a rude comment about Sam (because of course). Sam tells David this story, but when he finds out that Kelsey was born in ’97, he is completely sure that Kelsey is not his child because he has been “shooting blanks” since ’93 after the coffee pot incident. So who is Kelsey?

Sam and Jay call Kelsey and Dan back to the house, where they announce that they would like Kelsey to have another DNA test done at the lab of their choice. Kelsey immediately breaks down, asking Dan what she should do. Not understanding why Kelsey is asking Dan for advice, Kelsey admits that Dan agreed to pay her $10,000 to pretend to be Sam’s cousin. Dan explains that he got an offer from a major hotel chain to buy Woodstone at a price well above market value, so he came up with this plan to lure Sam and Jay out of their house to pay off his gambling debts. Sam and Jay kick them out and the threat is officially ended.

Big cliffhanger

Image via CBS/Paramount

After Jay ate sushi at a strip club and started having stomach problems, he and Sam leave Woodstone to get Pepto Bismol after their confrontation with Dan and Kelsey. Arriving home, they get into the car and chat about what happened that day. Jay confirms that they are not accepting the hotel chain’s offer to buy their house, but Sam intervenes, saying that they can never leave the ghosts. Reflecting on the ghosts, Sam remembers how much they have grown in the last two years and how everyone has become a family. She can’t imagine life without them, which is the emotional start to the now-revamped Season 3 when Sam sees a light outside, which can be assumed to mean one of the ghosts has been sucked off. Who could it be? (Jay hopes it’s Trevor.)
