Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Ted Lasso’s third season.Although it’s unclear, even at the time of this writing, whether the newest season will Ted Lasso will complete the entire series, the plot says otherwise. New story arcs appear in every episode of Season 3, and there is no time left to explore them. At the beginning of the season, secondary characters suddenly came to the fore with their own opportunities for character development. While these storylines were touching and refreshing (like the LGBTQ+ storyline), it doesn’t lead to a satisfying conclusion to the series as a whole.

So far, nine out of 12 episodes have been released in the third season, and it still feels like the start of a season. Until episode 7, the fate of AFC Richmond still seemed bleak with a continuous losing streak. The final season’s goal seems to lead to an eventual battle and victory over West Ham, while also bringing in the Wonder Child, Nate (Nick Mohammed) will get back to the team in progress - but that hasn’t been the focus because much of character development, and in turn team development, is rushed. There are many conflicts for many characters with either poor resolution or no resolution at all.

Sam Obisanya played by Tohib Jimo, this season has been slightly neglected. Only one episode focuses on the conflict that arose when he criticized a politician’s immigration policy on Twitter. Afterwards, his restaurant is vandalized, leaving him heartbroken. In the end, the team comes together to supplement his livelihood, but this storyline is essentially unrevealed. Not only will this conflict never arise again, but so will his relationship with Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) except for a few awkward looks.

Romantic storylines are rushing too

Rebecca’s novels were a big part Ted Lasso throughout the run, so the sudden end of her relationship with Sam without any other talk does a disservice to both her and Sam’s character. Instead, Rebecca is given a barely coherent psychic reading followed by fans, which could presumably lead her to a better romance. This plot point has received a bit more attention than others, including a possible final showdown between West Ham and AFC Richmond, but even this arc shows no sign of completion.

The obvious love interest for Rebecca is Ted Lasso himself because it was foretold and he also fits the description of her psychic’s vague reading. However, they didn’t spend much time together all season, and instead, the only opportunity to bond forced Rebecca to spend the night with a stranger. If Ted and Rebecca truly become part of each other, fans deserve to see their relationship in full bloom and see how they work together as a couple in their personal and professional lives. Instead, Rebecca still leaves her choice and Ted still hopes that his ex-wife will return instead of trying to move on. Ted’s reluctance to move on is a realistic representation, but it further advances the argument that another season would do the trick to give him more time to comfortably return to the dating scene.

Romance often needs the slow approach that the series only provides to improve AFC Richmond’s performance. Even after three seasons, the team is still struggling to show past mediocrity and the only improvement is their closer bond with each other. The whole series as a whole emphasizes that the team is becoming like a family, so trying to give the story arcs to as many people as possible only made its final season rush. Yes, the family bond is important, but just as important is the ending that fits such a great show. To make an end Ted Lassothe journey becomes even more rewarding, both in terms of established storylines and in terms of the show itself, another season is almost necessary at this point.
