Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. In 3, of course, there are many touching moments, but seeing Drax (Dave Batista) to become the father of dozens of orphans is definitely at the top. Over the years, we’ve all learned to love and appreciate the big goofy Guardians and his attitude, and the new movie showed that “father” side of his character that many of us had even forgotten existed. Looking at him, we see the Destroyer, a skilled warrior and ruthless killer who is never easily defeated, but it’s always fun to see how warm and cheerful he is under all that muscle.
Although Dave Bautista has already confirmed his plans to leave the MCU now that Volume. 3 released, the new film brings another level of development to Drax and reminds us of why he is the way he is. When he, NebulaKaren Gillan) and praying mantis (Pom Klementieff), finally enter the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) ship, they find themselves in a dungeon full of kids who are trying to tell the three Guardians how to free them, but they do not speak the same language. Only later does Drax take the lead and reveal that he knew how to talk to children all along, much to everyone’s surprise. Why didn’t he say this before? “Because you didn’t ask,” he replies, disguising a lesson for Nebula.
Drax is the real dad…
When he talks to the kids aboard the High Evolutionary’s ship, he gets it right. Everything from the language they speak to the language they understand is not the same, mind you. Children and adults do not speak the same language, which is why raising a child can sometimes be so difficult. Nebula would never get through to children and captives speaking with urgency, but when Drax intervenes and does little things like an ape (despite actually imitating a robot, but understand), he gets their attention. Children don’t understand urgency like we do, but they can be made to act if they are spoken to in the right way.
This is exactly what Drax does, reminding everyone that he was once the father of a little girl. Remember this? Firstly guardians of the galaxythat was his defining trait: an angry and bitter man who lost everything because of Thanos (Josh Brolin) and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) - and by “everything” we mean his wife Ovetta and daughter Kamaria. His planet, Kylos, was subject to Thanos’ usual modus operandi: randomly splitting the population into two sides, destroying one and allowing the other to survive. There is no need to say who survived. That’s what made him constantly go on a rampage against the two warlords.
However, before all this, he was a family man. Kilosians are naturally unable to understand figures of speech and have no social filter, so he recounted excerpts from his life story in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - even some hot places. He recalled how he met Ovett, as well as stories told by his father about how he was conceived. As odd as it may seem (hey, he finds it beautiful, to each his own), it shows his true nature as a family man. He is a born watchman and only became a Destroyer when he had nothing to take care of.
Losing a child is unthinkable suffering, contrary to all the laws of nature, so we can understand why Drax turned out to be the way he was in the first part. guardians movie. However, when someone becomes a parent, this trait never goes away, so it was easy for him to communicate with children in Volume. 3.
… and he always behaved like one
Drax only started to soften up again when he joined the Guardians, and looking back, we can see that deep down he never stopped being a father. Yes, the Kylosians have their natural hurdles when it comes to language, but some of his strange ways might seem almost like normal father behavior when you think about it. This invisibility joke Avengers: Infinity War? I mean, does anyone really believe they can blend in with their surroundings while remaining still? Yes, dads. Not in truth, but for the entertainment of their children.
So Drax actually became the father of the team. Firstly guardianshe consoles the Rocket (Bradley Cooper) after Groot (VIN diesel) victim. IN Volume. 2, he becomes a surrogate father for Mantis. The whole scene in the dungeon with the kids in Volume. 3 even sounds like a lesson in disguise for Nebula, if you think about it. She exploded and yelled at him and Mantis, stating their alleged “incompetence”. We understand that Nebula was upset and upset and Mantis protected him and erased his memory of it, but it almost feels like she didn’t because Drax didn’t come to help even when he knew he could. After Nebula’s outburst (and let’s remember that her father never loved her and was a genocidal maniac), his attitude is almost like a father telling his daughter to do things her own way and call if she needs help. She needed help, but she didn’t call, so he taught her. How many times have we received similar lessons from our parents?
Another very paternal moment was aboard the Orgocorp when Mantis influenced a guard to fall in love with Drax. His approach to her joke was as ‘paternal’ as possible, as if he were letting a child do the same joke for the millionth time because he knew it would amuse her. Imagine how many times Mantis tugged at him to make him react like that. It also shows that his relationship with her was never romantic, but that of a father and daughter. He is always worried about her protection and is sad to see her leave at the end of the movie because the parents get upset when the kids leave the nest. Mantis is another Guardian who never had a real father (remember, her father was literally a planet), so Drax naturally took on that role.
In the last sequence Volume. 3 Drax even dances with the kids on Knowhere during the “Dog Days Are Over” needle, showing that he always knew how to do it. He declared his hatred for dancing in the first guardians, yes, but let’s remember who he was then. He’s maintained his stance on this over the years, and now it seems like this might be the longest-running dad joke in the MCU because he’s been able to dance all along. Now he has a new family, he takes his daughter and wife with him, and he has many new children to take care of. He can dance a little.
