The story focuses on Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan in the original film and Anguri Rice in a new adaptation) when she transfers from Africa to a new high school in America. And it is there that she realizes that the rules of wild animals apply to life in high school as well. She befriends Damien and Janice, but high school dynamics eventually take over and turn her life into a war between girls.

In the upcoming musical Moana star Aulii Cravalho will play Janice Yang, Cady’s best friend and ex-girlfriend of Regina George. Regina plays Rene Rapp who famously won the Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actress and later played Regina herself on Broadway. We recently spoke with Cravalho about the upcoming adaptation!

We’re going back to high school

When the collider Christina Reddish asked Cravalho about the upcoming adaptation, she was so thrilled to be thrown into the world of film-turned-musical-turned-musical. Radish asked: “You are also in Mean Girls Musical movie. What did you like about working with the cast on this material? Were you a fan of the movie? And Cravalho was happy to talk a bit about her portrayal of Janice Yang, as well as working with the cast and Fey to bring the musical to life, explaining:

“I don’t really know anyone who hasn’t watched Mean Girls. We all have. We all have this material somewhere, deep in the back of our brains. So playing Janice Yen in it makes me so happy. My hair is cut and I have green tips. We have pre-recorded the music. I was so excited to work with René Rapp and Jacquel Spivey who created it on Broadway and themselves from that stage world. They bring such power to their characters. And also our directing team, Samantha [Jayne] and Arturo [Perez Jr.]come from a musical background, so they have a lot of respect for live vocals and the power that comes from storytelling through songs. I am so excited. Tina Fey was on set a lot, so we were all just trying to make her proud. It was a great run. We all just went back to high school again.”

Rapp, best known for his role as Leighton on Max. Sexual life of female studentstook on the role of Regina George (who was created Taylor Louderman) following her success at the Jimmy Awards, which honor achievements in high school theater productions. Rapp takes over the role of Regina again in the film and is joined by Broadway alumni. Jacquel Spivey (who was recently nominated for his work in strange loop on Broadway).
