When warm weather hits New York, it’s not like literally anywhere else in the United States. Not because New York is special, but because everyone in the city can be found in the parks. Since there are only a few of them, everyone usually finds their place in Central Park and tries to explain to their friends where they are. This is the beauty of warm weather in the city and Saturday night life really nailed the characters you’ll see and… well, how hard it is to tell someone where you’re sitting. Thank you Ego Nvodim.
There were two reporters at the cold opening (Bowen Yan And Heidi Gardner) got out first for the news, talking to everyone we love (or hate) to see in the park. A man in overly tight shorts walks behind you (performed by Mikey Day) and two guys with binoculars that you might want to avoid, it was just a great look at what it’s like to try to walk through Central Park on a good day. No, really. The only person missing from this sketch is the guy who wears a suit and a rat head and runs around town making videos like his life depends on it.
But this is evidence of spring. Lately the weather in New York has turned summery, as Gardner points out in the sketch. It was almost 90 degrees, almost two months ahead of schedule, and as the sketch jokes, the climate implications of this are dire, but that doesn’t stop the New Yorkers we know and love from going to the park to sunbathe, and no doubt you’ll see all those people in cold open skits in the park if you decide to go to Central Park on a warm day.
SNL Cold Open perfectly captures the mood of New York
There’s no better place than Central Park, and because it’s so big, Nwoim’s character represented so much of the park experience: yelling to your friends that you’re at a tree in a field and expecting them to know what you’re talking about. O. This is the Central Park experience for you. Overall, it was a great and simple cold opening because even though it was unique to New York, you can understand the warm day mentality.
