After several decades and several disputes, Francis Ford Coppolalongtime passion project metropolis officially ended production. The multiple Academy Award winner first conceived the ambitious project in 1980. However, unlike the passionate projects of well-known authors, the concept project required a lot of funding, which was one of the many obstacles that prevented its rapid development. Against all odds, Coppola was able to get the film off the ground, and now there are only a few months left before we witness what promises to be an immersive cinematic experience.
The announcement was made via the newly created official Instagram account for the film, which is rapidly gaining momentum, reflecting how eager fans are to see yet another Coppola masterpiece. “It’s a wrapper,” read the caption for a photo of a giant cracker with the film’s title, as seen on the page.

Since no major studio would accept Coppola’s idea to make metropolis, the film stalled in development hell until the director decided to self-finance the project with his own money. According to reports, Coppola was able to afford the $100 million budget needed for the film through the sale of some assets, including popular wineries in the Northern California region. Filming for the epic began last fall in Atlanta, Georgia, but the film had its final scaling hurdle when it had to go through a major makeover in the creative department. However, reports at the time seemed to exaggerate the situation, stating that production was in a downward spiral after the initial allocated budget was insufficient to cover Coppola’s demands, leading to key creative personnel abandoning the project.
Reports also spoke of on-set difficulties for the cast and crew, however Coppola and one of the film’s stars Adam Driver immediately denied the allegations. The driver in a statement at the time said about filming metropolis was “one of the best filming experiences I’ve had”. He further commented; “Our crew is fast and creative, our costume department is top notch, the actors are incredible and diligent, and Francis is one of the most insightful and caring people to work with.”

Coppola, who wrote and directed the film, has assembled an exciting all-star cast for what could potentially be his swan song. Apart from Driver, other stars include Forest Whitaker, Natalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire And Jason Schwartzman.
