Editor’s Note: The following contains minor spoilers from The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 4.In Chapter 20: The Foundling, our attention returns to Dean Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grog. With Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), they become closer to the Children of the Watch, training and fighting in tandem. This is the shortest episode of the third season so far, but this episode The Mandalorian still contains many hidden connections. This is the way.
The Foundlings, the episode’s titular nickname, are the focus of this episode. Now that Dean and Bo-Katan have joined the Children of the Watch, where the Mandalorians currently train their children, Grog finds himself in the friendly company of other foundlings. “It’s time for you to learn along with the other foundlings.” Dean insists that Grog begin further training, and Grog immediately shows great ability. Wesley Kimmel (nephew of talk show host Jimmy Kimmel) returns as Ragnar Vizsla, Grog’s training opponent and a foundling captured by a pterosaur.
As training progresses, many familiar weapons are used. Vibroblades, commonly wielded by Mandalorians, swing and slash. There are the EE-3 carbines, popularized by the bounty hunter Boba Fett himself, and even Grogu takes up Mandalorian weapons in the form of practice darts.
Peaks of Kirimorut
While planning to rescue Ragnar, Bo-Katan boasts mission confidence due to his training. The pterosaur has taken Ragnar to a high mountain peak, which they will have to climb to avoid detection. She refers to her experience of climbing the peaks of Kirimorut, a remote fortress on the planet Mandalore. During the Clone Wars, it even served as a safe haven for clone troopers who decided to leave the Grand Army of the Republic.
Speaking of pterosaurs, the seal of the Shrieking Hawk can be seen on the Mandalorian members of the Vizsla clan, including the kidnapped Ragnar and his father, Paz Vizsla (Tate Fletcher). The screeching hawk was a bird-like predator on Mandalore, and the symbol depicts the creature in a downward position, reminiscent of the beast diving for prey.
Because Armsmaster uses the Forge in front of Grog, she calls it the heart of Mandalorian culture. “The forge can reveal weaknesses.” When it hits the beskar, the image sends Grog back to memories of a past trauma. Deeper exploration of events Revenge of the Sith, Grogu remembers his escape from Coruscant. After Palpatine ordered Order 66 to be carried out, the clone troopers attacked all of the Jedi, including the Younglings.
You will always recognize that voice. After playing Jango Fett in attack of the clones, Temuera Morrison returned to the world star Wars in both The Mandalorian And Boba Fett book as a legendary bounty hunter. Since Jango Fett served as the template for the entire clone army, Morrison voiced and visually portrayed every clone trooper in the prequel films. He came back here to give another voice to the soldiers executing Order 66.
In a triumphant return to star Warsactor Ahmed Best takes on the role of Kelleran Beck, a Jedi Master tasked with looking after young Padawans. He best played Jar Jar Binks in all three prequel films and expressed his deep gratitude to the fans for the warm reception in the movie. star Wars world. During a flashback, it is revealed that this Jedi was the key to Grog’s escape. With help from the Naboo Royal Security Forces, Kelleran and Grog are able to escape into hyperspace, surviving the death of Order 66.
As Grogu and his Jedi savior Kelleran Beck race to evacuate Coruscant, we see all the familiar scenery of the city-covered planet, the iconic backdrop star Wars prequels. We also see Umate Peak, the highest mountain below the urban structure and the only part of the planet’s surface that remains uncovered. This visually links The Mandalorian to the first three. star Wars episodes since we encountered this peak one episode before with Dr. Pershing.
Nubian H-type yacht, LAAT and V-wings
Iconic star Wars There are many spaceships in Grog’s memories. The Nubian H-type yacht first became famous in The Phantom Menace when he brought Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala to Tatooine to meet young Anakin Skywalker. In this episode, it serves as a rescue ship for Grog and Kelleran Beck. The Low Altitude Assault Transport (LAAT) was the main vehicle of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Fans may remember Jedi Master Yoda’s trip to LAAT in attack of the clones, and there is something sinisterly ironic about the fact that these warships are now after Grog. After he and Kelleran leave the surface of Coruscant on a Nubian yacht, the V-wing fleet joins the pursuit. As seen in the prequel films and Star Wars: The Clone WarsAlpha-3 Nimbus V-wing starfighters were the early predecessors of the TIE fighters, their silhouette echoing the design of the latter.
As Grogu snaps out of his memories, Armsmaster completes the gift she made for him. Mandalorians have a tradition of donating some of the beskar they earn to foundlings, and the first piece of armor to Grog of the Forge bears the seal of the Mudhorn clan, a new Mandalorian clan created by Din Djarin. Near the end of the first season, Dean is attacked by a mudhorn, a large horned beast. He was saved by Grog and his ever-increasing sensitivity to the Force, so the mudhorn is a fitting symbol.
After the Mandalorians successfully rescue the foundling from the clutches of a pterosaur, the giant beast chases them back to their hideout. However, the way they are stored points to a smart callback The Phantom Menace, when the crocodile-like creature from earlier this season breaks out of the water, devouring a predatory pterosaur. “There’s always a bigger fish,” as Qui-Gon Jinn would say.
Visions of Mythosaurus
At the end of the episode, Armsmaster takes Bo-Katan to the forge so she can repair a Beskar pauldron for her shoulder. Their conversation is evidence of the growing trust between them, and Bo-Katan opens up more comfortably. After requesting a mythosaur symbol, which Armsmaster assures is owned by all Mandalorians, Bo-Katan confesses to her that she has witnessed the legendary beast. Potentially causing Bo-Katan to doubt her memories, Gunsmith tells her that she will be very lucky if she has such a vision. “When you take the Path of Mand’alor, you will see many things.”
