Today we have bittersweet news for the Prime Video series. Their own league. The show will return for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, this will be the show’s last chance at success, and it will only run four episodes, half the number of its first season. News of the renewal and cancellation will come about seven months after the show’s original August 2022 debut.
Based on the classic movie of the same name. Their own league follows Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson), a woman who heads to Chicago to try out for the All-American Women’s Professional Baseball League. When she arrives, she meets other women who are pursuing the same dream. In addition, the show features pitcher Max Chapman (Shante Adams) faces racism and sexism as she tries to find a team. The first season not only focuses on the women’s individual journeys, but also follows the Rockford Peaches who make their mark on baseball.
The series premiered to positive reviews from both critics and the general public, receiving high ratings from both on Rotten Tomatoes. It has received recognition in various categories from organizations such as GLAAD, Independent Spirit Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Critics Choice Association and several others. While there is a lot to love about the show, it has mostly been praised for its portrayal of queerness, something the original film never explicitly dived into.
Follow the news, co-creator and co-showrunner Will Graham made a statement through Twitter protection of queer and POC-centered series:
“The only thing I will say for now is: #ALeagueOfTheirOwn is not a small or niche show. The audience is local, but we understand that it is very large. It outperformed many other shows that have been updated. Journalists please. stop amplifying the story [t]POC/Queer shows are inherently niche or small if you don’t have the data. This narrative is racist, homophobic and all that. Please take care of these things with some care.”
