Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for The Ted Lasso Show on Apple TV+.Ted Lasso is one of the most moving series of the decade, and while the sports-comedy-drama has mostly positive undertones, the main character is gearing up to face a formidable adversary in Season 3 (premiering March 15) now that Nate has decided to work during competitive times.
Like Nate, many of the other characters on the show have surprised fans with their arcs, proving to be the opposite of what fans thought they were. Some of the show’s best characters aren’t necessarily the most likable, but they each add to the story.
10 Dani Rojas
Dani brings pure joy every time he is on screen. With the exception of his brief bout of sadness after accidentally killing a small dog, Dani is never seen without a smile on his face. He has a real passion for the sport that goes perfectly with his amazing talent.
Fans love that he is always there to cheer up the team and remind them all why they are playing: it’s not just about winning, it’s about “football is life”. Dani played a bigger role in the overarching story than fans realize: it was his transformation after meeting Dr. Sharon that convinced Ted to keep her around and maybe even pay her a visit himself.
9 Leslie Higgins
Leslie is the perfect right hand, doing whatever it takes. While he first leaned over backyards for Rebecca, even when he didn’t agree with what she was doing, he finally started to show that he had a backbone.
However, one of Leslie’s best scenes, along with his encounters with Diamond Dog, was when he and his wife welcomed several team members to their home for Christmas dinner in one of the show’s most touching episodes. Ted Lasso. It showed how sweet and kind Leslie is and how important he is to the team, even if he is often ignored in the office.
8 Nathan Shelley
Nate will star in the third season as a rival against the protégé. Now working with Rupert, Nate’s inflated ego and insecurities mean he will do whatever it takes to win and prove himself a worthy coach in Ted Lasso. Feeling insulted, underappreciated and underappreciated and wanting to impress his parents, Nate is arguably one of the most lovable characters.
He has great ideas, but up to this point he had neither the confidence nor the position to implement them. Having found his voice, Nate may have gone too far in the wrong direction by becoming overconfident and vindictive. But that’s what makes his character so interesting: he could potentially bring out the worst in Ted.
7 Coach Beard
Coach Beard is Ted’s yin yang, the perfect companion. He may not have the infectious optimism of Ted Lasso, but he’s here to rein Ted in, though he also has his own issues, which fans saw in a hilariously bizarre day-in-the-life episode of his character.
His one-liners and one-liners are sometimes the funniest in the series. But the fans also sympathize with coach Beard, realizing how lonely he is, especially in a foreign country. He seeks communication wherever he can, even if the woman is not quite right for him.
6 Sam Obisanya
Sam is one of those people that fans want to be friends with. He has a sincere, kind heart. So much so that he was willing to risk millions of dollars to honor his homeland and family. He also chose to stay with his crew out of loyalty, although he could have moved on to a life of luxury.
The fact that Rebecca met Sam on a dating app without realizing it was him proves how easy it is for him not only to like but also to fall in love. He is kind, honest, and sweet, and could very well be the driving force that will lead the team to victory in Season 3.
5 Jamie Tartt
Jamie Ted Lasso a character who is rude, stupid and cautious, with too much talent and ego to match. At first, he comes across as pompous and arrogant, holding the ball and believing that he carries the entire team. But Jamie has one of the most compelling character arcs on the show.
The most instructive moment is the interaction with his verbally abusive father. Fans see a change in Jamie when Ted starts treating him the way a son should be treated. It is clear that Jamie has a big heart, but he is afraid to show it for fear of appearing weak.
4 Keely Jones
Keely is another character who completely changed the audience’s opinion of her and contributed to the fact that Ted Lasso a must-see Apple TV+ show. It quickly became clear that you should never judge a book by its cover or typical characters. She turned out to be not only much more than Jamie’s frivolous girlfriend, but also very smart and resourceful, as well as kind-hearted and sweet.
She quickly befriends Rebecca, defends Ted when she sees people trying to harm him, and is the only person to get through to Roy and show him that he is more than just his reputation.
3 Rebecca Welton
Of all the characters on Ted LassoRebecca surprised me the most, in a good way. Initially portrayed as a villainess, the jilted woman made several bad decisions while trying to use Ted to get back at her ex.
But over time, it turned out that Rebecca is actually a very sweet, kind, loving person who allowed her anger to get the better of her. She is always there for Ted when she sees that he needs something, even before she changes her mind about what she is doing. From that moment on, from her friendship with Keely to her song at her father’s funeral to her relationship with Sam, there’s a lot to love about Rebecca.
2 Roy Kent
There’s a good reason why Brett Goldstein won so many awards for his role as Roy Kent. He is a surly, constantly embittered and angry veteran football player who has somehow lost his love for the game but refuses to leave. He has a permanently sour face and is the first to taunt Ted when he arrives.
But like many other characters in the series, Roy eventually does a full 180-degree turn. He warmly treats Ted, shows emotions with Keely, and even shows affection towards his niece in his unique and foul-mouthed manner. Every scene with him is funny, even when he doesn’t want to be. There is a lot of focus on Ted in terms of mental health, but Roy’s journey also demonstrates that Ted Lasso is one of the few shows that accurately portrays mental health.
1 Ted Lasso
Unsurprisingly, the protagonist Ted Lasso is the best. He is sweet, kind and always joyful. He does nice things for people without any hidden intentions. The first sign of this is that not only does he give Rebecca cookies every morning, but he also bakes them at home and doesn’t tell her he’s doing it. Even when Jamie dumps him to play for a rival team, Ted sends the young man a congratulatory note with a sentimental gift (a toy soldier) to show his unwavering support, knowing that Jamie never got it from his own father.
Ted’s darkness is often masked, but the fact that he is finally opening up to Dr. Sharon and starting to come to terms with his childhood trauma takes courage. And the fans love him for it. Lasso is the antithesis of toxic masculinity.
