Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Shrink Episode 6.

Decrease has quickly established itself as one of the top shows in Apple TV’s growing collection, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since it’s run by the same creative team as Ted Lasso. Taking a page from the playbook of the latter, Decrease left his audience baffled during episode 6 by suggesting the wrong direction around his two stars. Just like how the show, directed by Jason Sudeikis, showed viewers an unlikely relationship with one of the AFC Richmond players, where Decrease decided to go to the sixth episode, this is a place that no one expected. That’s because the writers deftly led the audience to another potential couple making that first move, even building on that promising connection earlier in the episode, before revealing a last-minute shocking twist. Seeing JimmyJason Segel) and Gaby (Jessica Williams) the last-minute hook-up was a “no way” highlight while viewers were on their toes heading into next week’s episode. In this day and age where social media is leading to so many fan theories about what’s next for the series, it’s been fun to watch that level of sleight of hand pay off for Apple. Series.

How ‘shrinking’ made viewers look differently

To create this embarrassing moment for viewers, the show had to sow the seeds in a different direction, and it did so in the form of Alice (Lukita Maxwell) and Sean (Luke Tenney). After several saplings were planted in the first three episodes, it is not until the final scene of episode 4 that Alice enters the guest house where Sean (and unknowingly her father does too) is sleeping, and she whispers, “God, you beautiful.” From now on, Decrease highlights this nascent friendship, even showing Sean texting Alice immediately after meeting his father, suggesting that she is the first person he thinks of when he needs some cheer. There is another scene where she shows concern for his safety as he climbs the water tower, again serving as a gentle push for them to become something more with the couple. The final step in solidifying this twist was for the fake plot to reach its climax, which happens shortly before that surprise scene with Jimmy and Gaby. Alice gives in to her feelings and approaches Sean for a kiss, which he brushes off due to their age difference, eventually leaving her room. It’s hard to watch because Maxwell doesn’t hold back from showing her broken heart as she collapses onto the bed. It is no coincidence that this moment occurs in the ongoing scene between Jimmy and Gaby, creating an unpredictable wave of emotion over the last three minutes.

Jimmy and Gaby take the next step

Earlier in the episode, Jimmy confided to Gaby about how his marriage fell apart before his wife Tia’s (Lilan Bowden) death, and he felt that she was going to leave him anyway, because there was no more love. Gabi, who was friends with Tia, closes this by telling her colleague that Tia never stopped caring for him. Jimmy challenged her to prove it, which of course is impossible considering she’s dead, but Gaby finds a way to show him in this scene that love never stopped by showing him a picture from her birthday two weeks before Tia’s death. . In it, his wife has “love in her eyes” as she looks at Jimmy, crushing his belief that their marriage is coming to an end. The purpose of this, in addition to wrapping up the previous conversation, was to bring the audience back to earth after what happened with Sean and Alice and add another layer to this friendship between Gaby and Jimmy.

That’s when the writers completed the mission and introduced the most important moment to date in the first season. Gaby, who was seen in the opening scene of this episode with another man in bed but was unable to make a deal because something was wrong, consoles Jimmy with a hug, delivers one of her main jokes, and after a short delay, passionately kisses Jimmy before appearing. credits. The aforementioned opening scene with Gabi was the first look viewers have had of her character since her divorce was touched on in episode three. There were several comments in this episode that since then, Gabi has not been able to turn on any of her sexual encounters. It was the writers laying the groundwork for what was to come, but it was subtle that there was never any sign that she would end up gravitating towards her friend. It was this level of prowess that the show has shown on several occasions when it has taken difficult situations and turned them into accessible themes that has made Decrease stand out among peers.

How will this moment affect the second half of the season? Considering how close all of these characters are and how they all interact with each other, it seems hard to believe that these co-stars will be able to keep this secret, but they will likely do their best to avoid it. After all, Jimmy had just begun to build a relationship with his daughter. Gaby, though fresh out of a divorce, is involved in his daughter’s life and has changed the angle of her friendship with Liz (Christa Miller), so bringing this news to the table is likely to cause some drama. Again, if there are real feelings here, and it is likely that two people who have been friends for a long time could reach this point, then the narrative of these two having a real relationship would be interesting to watch. Whatever unfolds from this, there’s no doubt Decrease will be better because of it, as the show has shown its ability to execute beautifully crafted plots and make them play out organically.
