For those who don’t know about the original and are about to experience Lilo and Stitch’s story for the first time, here’s a spoiler-free summary.
In the original 2002 film, the story begins light years from Earth, where the eccentric mad scientist Dr. Jumba (David Ogden Stiers) is under investigation. The Galactic Federation accused the Jamba of violating one of their most sacred laws - the creation of a sentient life form with the intent to destroy everything in its path. Despite claiming he is not guilty, the court is quick to bring in the life form in question, a repulsive, short-tempered, and apparently brutish organism known only as Experiment 626. It doesn’t take long for the Grand Councilor (Zoe Caldwell) to sentence Experiment 626 to permanent exile, but that’s easier said than done. Experiment 626 is able to escape its limitations and hijack a spacecraft, eventually crash-landing on the remote Hawaiian island of Kauai. This is where we meet our second protagonist, Lilo Pelekai (Davy Chase) is an imaginative but restless little girl who finds it difficult to make friends. Lilo is currently being cared for by her older sister Nani (Tia Carrere), and they both struggle to keep their relationship and life intact after the unexpected death of their parents.
Shortly after Experiment 626 crashed into the island, it was quickly hit by a truck and sent to a nearby animal shelter. Nani, thinking it would be good for Lilo to have a pet she can care for and socialize with, decides to take her to a shelter to find a companion dog. This is how the family welcomes 626, and while Nani is wary of the strange looking animal, Lilo immediately feels a connection to the creature, whom she affectionately named Stitch. Now with a social worker threatening to take Lilo away and two other aliens hired to capture Stitch, Lilo, Stitch and Nani go out of their way to keep their family together for as long as possible.
