We’re slowly getting closer to seeing our favorite shrink, Frasier Crane, return to our screens as Variety has confirmed casting has begun for the long-awaited sequel series. Still, Kelsey Grammer was the only one to confirm his role in the series, returning to reprise the acclaimed lead role. Fresh messages now show that joining Grammer Nicholas Lyndhurst who will play a new character from Frasier’s past, leaving Grammer still just an original cast member returning for the revival series.
Plot details for the revived series are still being kept under wraps, but a description of Alan Cornwall, the character Lyndhurst is set to play, provides a small hint as to what to expect. Alan is described as “an old college buddy of Fraser’s who became a university professor. British, drunk and larger than life, Alan has an intelligence on par with Fraser’s, which he is unsure of and does not want to use. Their relationship is apparently set up as symbiotic, as a further description of their friendship reveals that “Alan’s mischievous streak could be exactly what Frazier could use to shake up his routine, while Frazier’s thoughtful guidance could help.” Alan to find some direction that he has missed in his own life.”
Both Lyndhurst and Grammer share a past working relationship that they could use to embody this new dynamic as both starred together in Man from La Mancha for the English National Opera at the London Coliseum. The British actor, who started his career as a child, has proven his comic prowess in more than a handful of well-known sitcoms. He broke out with his role as Rodney Trotter in Only fools and horses before appearing in Good night, sweety, butterflies, two of us, Piglet Filesand After you left. He has several coveted awards to his credit, including one British Comedy Award and 3 British Academy Television Awards.
After years of development hell, Paramount+ gave the green light to a revival last year. It was then revealed that the series would be set in a different city than the parent series and would explore a new set of circumstances and thus introduce a set of new characters, of which Alan Lyndhurst is the first to be introduced. Grammer said that the sequel would be the protagonist’s third or fourth act, and as such is not a reboot, as it would be set several years after the events of the original series. However, he revealed that some original cast members may return as guests.
Chris Harris and Joe Crystalli will provide a revival script. Grammer will produce with Harris, Cristalli, Tom Russoand Jordan McMahon. Stay tuned to Collider for more timely updates on fraser rebirth when they come.
