Since its debut in April, Netflix heart block brought a lot of joy to viewers, both those who were already familiar with the source material and people who were just learning about the story centered on queer joy. Based Alice Osmangraphic novels, heart block follows NickKeith Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), two teenagers whose blossoming friendship begins to grow into something more. In doing so, Nick embarks on a journey of his own, discovering his sexuality. The series quickly became a hit with viewers, skyrocketed on the Netflix charts, and quickly received renewals for seasons 2 and 3.
Following in the footsteps of the graphic novel, the adaptation brings a sweet and fresh take on the romantic comedy genre, providing a much-needed media element for non-traditional viewers looking for wholesome content. Locke and Connor recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the series’ impact. Locke noted how unexpected the show’s demographic was, saying:
“I think we all expected it to have a pretty young Gen Z audience. What we didn’t expect was millennials who watched the show and saw things they didn’t have when they were growing up. I think we’d especially overlook the kind of people who would watch it. Mainly because Heartstopper is so rare and so new. I don’t think Heartstopper would have been made even five years ago, let alone 15 or 20 years ago.”
Connor echoed this sentiment, noting that a lot of queer media is “overwhelmingly negative. And in some way dark and harsh. There’s something extremely powerful about just watching queer people - whether they’re queer teenagers or queer adults - happy.” be able to express yourself. To be able to love and not be judged for it. It’s fine”. He likens heart block to the “classic Hollywood romance” that is often reserved for straight-forward media. He believes the show follows these familiar tropes, calling it an underappreciated aspect of the show.
“We have so many little references and allusions to them. And, you know, the queer community never had a classic Hollywood romance. heels. For example, in the eighth episode, there is that moment when we kiss in the hallway after a sports day. Our main goal was to make it feel like a real Hollywood slow motion romantic kiss. Very romanticized.”
