[This article contains spoilers for the Andor Season 1 Finale]AT Andorseason finale, everyone who searched the galaxy for Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) goes down to Ferrix in hopes of catching him at his mother’s funeral. It’s an emotional final act that showcases just how close a community Ferrix is and how much Maarva Andor loves (Fiona Shaw) had everyone, including her droid B2EMO (voiced by Dave Chapman). Before the premiere of the finals own Collider Steve Weintraub had the opportunity to communicate with Tony Gilroycreator of the critically acclaimed series, and naturally B2EMO’s role in the final two episodes fit.

COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Daughters of Ferrix, Maarva’s death is told to the audience through the darkened eyepiece of B2EMO, and as distant voices speak of her death and what they will have to do to prepare for her funeral, B2’s anguish is palpable. This is a droid that gets stressed out when forced to lie, so it’s no surprise that he can’t handle the loss of Maarva, especially after he already lost Cassian when he had to flee the planet. Gilroy shared how they came to the decision to tell this part of the story from the droid’s point of view and how they decided to use it at her funeral, saying:

Well, I had an ace, I had a hole card. I knew that I would be making a hologram. So you’re trying to give the viewers the reassurance that you care about them. By this point, the audience will probably be confident that we know what we’re doing. And then the audience says, “Well, wait a minute. She just died and she’s backstage and you’ve been so good at all these other things and are you really going to do that?” And that also creates some tension. You didn’t see it, but I knew what I was getting into.

Droids are an integral part star Wars universe, and whether one has watched the movies or not, most people can recognize characters like R2-D2 and C-3PO. Depending on their purpose and how they are treated, droids in the world star Wars are multifaceted. You have killer droids like Chopper. Star Wars Rebelsenergetic and friendly droids like BB-8 in the sequel films and deadpan and snarky droids like K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Stories. True to its name too emo, B2EMO is a very restless and stressed droid throughout his appearance in Andor. Gilroy also shared his B2EMO concept, saying:

Man, that was so much fun. Because you’re going to make one, right? You’re like, “Okay, I’m going to make one, and I want it to be the family dog.” And it’s an old woman that’s single, and she’s got this old dog, and the dog just loves her. What is it like to have an old dog in the house? So you have this idea, and then I probably wrote one, two, and three ahead of time. We started these conversations when I finished directing, when I finished pre-COVID and you started drawing and Luke [Hull] and I’m talking about how big it is, and how it feels, and how it falls apart, and what it does. What does it do, and what is the reality of what a rescue droid does? Why do they need this unit and what does it do?

Gilroy went on to talk about the process of turning B2EMO from a concept art sketch into an actual physical prop, saying, “Then it comes to the creatures and Neil Stevenson, and the concept art goes up there. the day you go there and they have prototypes and it’s amazing. So, the level of technical knowledge, creativity, depth, and more.”

Why are they building Andor Season 2?

While discussing the creation of B2EMO, Gilroy also revealed a few details about a mysterious prop being made for Season 2, which seemed to get him and the rest of the creative team, including the director, excited. Ariel Kleiman. It’s unclear what he’s discussing, but with filming starting earlier this week, it’s interesting to get these little details on where they are in the production process. Gilroy explained this enigmatic prop by saying:

We have to shoot on Monday, so we had a prop meeting on Friday and I do a lot of things remotely, making props remotely is very difficult. Do you really want to see them. So we have a big collection of props, and my brother John is there, and he’s hearing it now. So I said, “Dude, come to that thing.” Because he loves all that shit too. So we went to the prop shop on the lot and they showed us all of it. And they ended up showing us this thing that’s going to play a big role, it’s a big prop, it’s going to be in the second season. It’s very useful and very complex, and this guy created it. Johnny and I just stood there and Ariel Kleiman stood there, we stood there and watched this guy explain this damn thing they built. It’s so complicated, so crazy, so beautiful, and so far beyond what we thought. This is amazing.
