“Now more than ever, the world needs Documentary now!” Helen Mirren proclaims in a new trailer released for Season 4 of the parody documentary series. The hit comedy IFC is almost ready to once again feature powerful, deeply human stories after three years away from the documentary world, and a new trailer touts its long-awaited return. Glittering with a host of stars and teasing with “painstakingly curated” stories about our world, it promises the biggest episode release ever for the new season, which airs October 19 on IFC.
The trailer begins by revealing that this is not actually a season 4 trailer, but rather a season 53 trailer for an American organization known as Documentary now! Series host Mirren reimagines the series with the seriousness such a legendary show deserves, while clips shown in-between tease which films the long-running franchise will bring this time around. The show parodies documentaries of all eras and styles, starting with one nasty story about a man’s eerily intimate relationship with a monkey. From shirtless men throwing rocks at each other to one man’s mistaken entry into an arthouse theatre, the stories are positioned as essential to human existence, with Mirren highlighting how important the series is to Americans everywhere.
Season 53 (aka 4) boasts another superstar line-up which includes Alexander Skarsgard, Nicholas Brown, August Diehl, Cate Blanchett, Harriet Walter, Lillian Rover, Jamie Demetriouas well as Jonathan Pryce among others. The series was created by the famous quartet of comedians in Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyersas well as Rhys Thomas With SNLX Lorne Michaels executive producer and Broadway video producer. The show has been stellar in attracting outstanding talent from past seasons including Daryl Hall, Tim Robinson, Alana Chaim, Michael Keatonas well as Owen Wilson among many others.
Before six new episodes of the hit series were shown to the world, attendees at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival got to see the two-part premiere episode of Soldier of Illusion. With the series presented at the festival that started it all, Collider’s own Steve Weintraub spoke with Amisen, Thomas and the executive producer Alex Buono about the series in which they showed that all the stories would take place in the UK and that Blanchett actually inspired one of the episodes with her pitch 3 lounges by the sea as a documentary worth parodying the series.
Documentary now! returns for season 4 on October 19 with a two-episode premiere on IFC. The new episodes will also hit AMC+, with a three-episode premiere scheduled for the streamer. Check out the new trailer below.
