Vince Staples is expanding its presence in Hollywood as a new scripted comedy series based on his life and career has just been greenlit on Netflix. Name The Vince Staples Showfictional TV series Kenya Barris (Blackish, Adult) at the helm is said to be linked to Barris’ previous multi-million dollar contract with the streamer.
The semi-autobiographical series will take Staples’ rags-to-riches story with a touch of comedy. He will be based in Long Beach, California, where Staples and his family moved to escape the crime-ridden Compton, California area where he was born. While not much has been revealed about the plot, it’s likely that the show could explore Staples’ past with gang violence, which he’s been vocal against since he rose to prominence.
The rapper released a statement expressing his excitement about the project, saying, “I’m thrilled to be partnering with Netflix and Kenya Barris on The Vince Staples Show.” Further adding that “this is something I’ve been developing for some time and I’m glad it came to fruition.” Netflix head of comedy Tracey Pacosta also commented on the project with a statement; “Our mission is to work with the best artists in the world. Vince has already established himself as one of the most talented young musicians to date, and we are thrilled to see how his sensibility and sense of humor will translate into a unique comedy series.”
Bye The Vince Staples Show would be Staples’ first major role, the rapper had the opportunity to exercise his acting muscles in small roles in several other projects. He opened his filmography with a small role in a coming-of-age comedy-drama. Drug which featured an ensemble cast and a veteran actor Forrest Whitaker as its manufacturer. He famously appeared as himself in Issa Raycomedy drama series, Unreliable. More recently it became known that Staples starred in Forestromantic comedy based on the 1999 feature film of the same name.
Joining Barris as executive producer Jan Edelman as well as Maurice Williams. The project will reunite the trio who worked together on the rapper Baby Cudieanimated Netflix special Entergalactic. They will also be co-showrunners along with Barris representing his halabo ink society. Corey Smith as well as Kalmatic are also part of the production team, with the latter directing the first two episodes of the series.
