Patrick Hughes is an Australian film director and screenwriter currently prominent in the action film genre. With my latest project The man from Toronto, recently released this year, you can’t help but wonder what other films it’s got its eyes on, but take a quick look at this list and you’ll be instantly impressed. He has written and directed countless short films such as Lighter as well as Signs which won great respect and many awards, but after his feature film directorial debut in 2010, his career skyrocketed.
It’s not surprising if Hughes watched a lot of comedies and spaghetti westerns in his youth, as his films seem to have been heavily influenced by the themes of those genres. He seems to prefer tense action scenes that feel very Tarantino-like, as well as boldly funny humor that takes the tension out of those scenes with great ease. Based on his previous work, Hughes definitely has a talent for films that push the boundaries of action comedy and entertain a wide variety of audiences. Now without further ado, here are five of the best Patrick Hughes movies and where you can watch them.
Red Hill (2010)
Tense and gripping thriller red hill was Hughes’ first feature film. Between the small town setting and the old sheriff’s trail against the bad guy, this movie is pretty much a modern take. classic westerns. The story centers on Shane, a young police officer who moves to Red Hill with his pregnant wife. After receiving a cold reception from the Red Hill police, he learns that a dangerous criminal has escaped from prison to get revenge on his new boss. However, Shane faces a moral conflict when a supposed bad guy spares his life.
with themes corruption, justice and sweet old revenge, red hill is a gripping story about a criminal’s lust for revenge, filled with fearless shooters and exciting shootouts.

The Expendables 3 (2014)
with the first two Expendable materials films that have become giant hits, Sylvester Stallone was looking for a fresh, new director who could make the third part of the film even better than its predecessors. Enter Patrick Hughes, whose short film Signs impressed Stallone enough to get him the job.
The Expendables is a series about a group of elite mercenaries and their many missions. Franchise is an ode classic 80s action movies of which Stallone himself was a part. It also featured a powerful ensemble cast of virtually every action star to ever grace the movie screen. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Bruce Willis, as well as Harrison Ford having played roles in the franchise, just to name a few.
The third film focuses on a specific mission set by the CIA to capture an arms dealer who not only was a founding member of the Expendables, but was initially thought to be dead. But it’s not easy for the team, as they must overcome their feud and vengeance to take him alive so he can finally be tried for his crimes.

Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017)
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, as well as Salma Hayek, Hitman’s bodyguard it is a hilarious action comedy and the third feature film directed by Hughes. It centers around a hitman named Kincaid who is sent to The Hague so he can testify against an evil dictator named Duhovich. The chemistry between Jackson and Reynolds is a real treat for any viewer and is very reminiscent of Nick Nolte as well as Eddie Murphy in 48 hours or even John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Crime novel. They are delightfully funny and the comedy duo act out their scenes as hell. The comedy combined with thrilling action scenes makes this film stand out on Hughes’ ever-growing resume.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard (2021)
The ambitious sequel to the phenomenal action blockbuster. The killer’s wife’s bodyguard brings back the original all-star cast, while also introducing fantastic new additions, including Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hopper, as well as Frank Grillo. This time, Kincaid’s wife (Salma Hayek) turns to Bryce for help after her husband is kidnapped by mobsters. While doing so, they are caught by an Interpol agent, but instead of arresting them, he enlists their services to find a terrorist and business tycoon named Aristotle.
Amid light-hearted comedy and big-budget explosions, there’s the story of two friends whose loyalty is tested but ultimately wins out in the most absurd situations. This movie is easy to watch and goes well with a big bag of popcorn.

The Toronto Man (2022)
When this film was released on June 24, 2022, Hughes proved once again that he is an astute filmmaker with an eye for the action comedy genre. Kevin Hart plays a failed internet sports instructor and general misfit who is mistaken for a mysterious assassin played by Woody Harrelsonknown as the Toronto Man. Subsequently, they are both hired by a would-be Venezuelan dictator seeking to seize power. The film is an almost cheesy interpretation of traditional buddy cop films, but not meant to be taken that seriously. This is a fun, fast-paced and extremely entertaining movie that the whole family can watch and enjoy.
