San Diego Comic-Con is a hell of a time for the entertainment industry, not least because of directors whose involvement in projects is often announced, teased, or otherwise revealed. This is the busiest time of the year for movie and TV announcements, and Collider was delighted to be a part of the fun discussion in our Directors on Directors Panel, hosted in Room H, on selected films, especially action and sci-fi. the most famous directors. The panel was attended by Chad Stahelski, director of all four John Wick movies; Andrew Stanton, Director John Carteras well as classic animated films such as Finding Nemo as well as WALL-E; and Tim Miller, Director Dead Poolas well as Terminator: Dark Fate.
Along with some exciting news from Stahelski, one of the highlights of the panel was Miller, who hasn’t directed the film since 2019. dark fateannouncing that his newest project, a film called Thug, will be released directly on Netflix. The film, which Miller says is based on Eric Powellthe comic that Dark Horse publishes has been stuck in development hell for several years.
Prior to his directorial debut with Dead Pool in 2016, Miller himself served as creative lead and director on a number of projects, including scott pilgrim vs the world, the girl with the dragon tattoo, as well as Thor: The Dark World. He directed several short films before pairing with the Mercenary with a Mouth to bring one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes to the screen, and has worked on visual effects on a number of video games, including Star Wars The Old Republic as well as Mass Effect 2both of which earned him Visual Effects Society Award nominations in 2010 and 2011.
Miller also executive produced both Sonic the Hedgehog films that have been surprisingly successful financially, as well as the creation of a Netflix series Love, death + robots, for which he wrote two episodes and directed two more. The sci-fi anthology series won the director an Emmy in 2019 after much public praise when he won the award for Outstanding Animated Short Form. The series was nominated for the same award at that year’s Emmy Awards and was also nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing in a Comedy or Drama Series (Half an Hour) and in Animation.
